Caleb Yirenkyi set for move from FC Nordsjaelland to Coventry City in reported record transfer

Caleb Yirenkyi, a 20-year-old Ghanaian midfielder, is set to join Premier League club Coventry City from Danish side FC Nordsjaelland in a transfer reported on 5 August 2026.

Coventry, freshly promoted to the top flight, have already broken their transfer record three times this window with the arrivals of Aurele Amenda (£17.1m), Loum Tchaouna (£20m) and Carl Rushworth (£22.1m); Yirenkyi’s signing would become the club’s largest purchase. The move would also represent the highest fee ever received by a Scandinavian club, eclipsing FC Nordsjaelland’s previous sale of Ernest Nuamah to Lyon for €25m.

Media accounts differ on the exact figures. Reports say Frank Lampard played a key role in securing Yirenkyi, who is capable of operating in central midfield and at the back. Yirenkyi has experience in Europe, having made two appearances in this season’s UEFA Conference League qualifying rounds, and he scored a stoppage-time goal against Panama at the FIFA World Cup 2026 to secure a 1-0 group-stage win for Ghana.

The player who set up that World Cup goal, Brandon Thomas-Asante, is due to be Yirenkyi’s teammate at Coventry. Yirenkyi was born in Bechem, Ghana, won a national robotics championship trophy at 13, began his football education at the Right to Dream Academy at 11 and joined FC Nordsjaelland’s academy upon turning 18.

He made his senior debut for Nordsjaelland in September 2024 against Viborg FF and was permanently promoted to the first team in February 2025. In his breakthrough season he made 34 appearances across all competitions, 21 of them in the league, scoring two goals and providing two assists.

Yirenkyi earned his first senior call-up for Ghana at the 2025 Unity Cup and has since made 14 international appearances, scoring two goals; his World Cup strike made him the second-youngest Ghanaian to score at the tournament since Haminu Draman. A report from Tipsbladet says Coventry City have agreed a deal worth £23.14 million for the midfielder, with a further £2.57 million to be paid in add-ons.
