Cancelled Mass Effect 5 reportedly planned a galactic Cold War
On 2026-10-24, new details about the cancelled Mass Effect 5 resurfaced online after a leaked trailer and comments posted by DanticsOfficial on X, following the closure of the BioWare studio. DanticsOfficial expanded on those details in a recent YouTube video.
According to the leaks and the former Mass Effect Council member's account, the project reportedly used the working title Mass Effect Universe and was set 600 years after the Reaper War, moving the timeline beyond Commander Shepard while preserving his legacy. Players would have assumed the role of a fully customizable N7 operative, with gameplay emphasising agility and precision rather than carrying a large arsenal. Combat design was said to draw on close-quarters action and tactical espionage influences, specifically citing John Wick and James Bond.
The narrative focus was described as a tense galactic Cold War between three competing factions: one alliance made up of Humans, Krogan, Batarians and other species; a second bloc formed by the traditional Council races; and a third superpower led by the Geth, which reportedly controlled large self-designed megastructures. The leak also indicated the story would explore a deeper connection between the Milky Way and Andromeda.
The lead character was reported to be implanted with experimental technology that allowed in-combat hacking, seeing enemies through walls, manipulating the environment and remotely activating hazards. Mission design was described as a hybrid approach, combining handcrafted storytelling akin to the original Mass Effect trilogy with the player freedom seen in the Hitman series.
DanticsOfficial said he provided valuable feedback during the game's development and relayed these creative and mechanical details in his online posts. The leaks additionally claimed that Liara would have returned as an Asari Matriarch with a significant role in the planned narrative.
