Cape Town win tightens India's route to World Test Championship final

South Africa's 176-run, series-clinching victory over Australia on Day 5 of the third Test in Cape Town has made India's path to the World Test Championship 2025-27 final considerably tougher.
India sit fourth in the WTC standings with 68 points and a points percentage (PCT) of 51.52 after 11 matches, leaving them with seven Tests to play — two away in New Zealand followed by a five-match home series against Australia — and only the top two teams advance to the final.
The two-Test tour of New Zealand is identified as particularly important for India: winning both matches would lift their PCT to 58.97, while losing both would drop it to 43.59.
Even with mixed results in New Zealand, the five Tests at home to Australia will be decisive; India winning all five after losing both New Zealand Tests would raise their PCT to 59.26, winning all seven remaining matches would take them to 70.37, and six victories would yield 64.81 per cent, whereas two or more defeats would make qualification considerably tougher.
India's scheduled New Zealand fixtures are: 1st Test November 19–23, 2026 in Wellington and 2nd Test November 27–December 1, 2026 in Christchurch.
The home series against Australia comprises five Tests: 1st Test January 21–25, 2027 in Nagpur, 2nd Test January 29–February 2, 2027 in Chennai, 3rd Test February 11–15, 2027 in Guwahati, 4th Test February 19–23, 2027 in Ranchi and 5th Test February 27–March 3, 2027 in Ahmedabad.
The standings shifted after South Africa's win in Cape Town; the 176-run victory gave South Africa a 2-1 series win and moved their PCT to 71.42, lifting them into second place, while Australia slipped from first to third as their PCT fell from 75 to 69.23. New Zealand moved to the top of the table with 72.22 per cent, having collected 52 points from six Tests, and India rose to fourth after Bangladesh's defeat to the West Indies in Mirpur pushed Bangladesh down to fifth. With South Africa, New Zealand and Australia occupying the top three positions, India's qualification equation has become more complicated.
Gill and Co. will need to take care of their own results while hoping their rivals drop crucial points in the remainder of the cycle. India begin the two-Test tour of New Zealand with the first Test in Wellington on November 19–23, 2026.
