Preston North End, reduced to ten men, eliminated Huddersfield on penalties in a Carabao Cup tie at Goodison Park on 8 August 2026 after Jusef Erabi levelled in stoppage time and Delano Burgzorg converted the decisive spot-kick.

The match was staged at Goodison Park because Preston’s Deepdale pitch was not ready; normal time finished 1-1 and goalkeeper Daniel Iversen saved two penalties in the shootout. Lewis Gibson received a red card, leaving Preston a man light for 69 minutes, and Radinio Balker had given Huddersfield the lead from a set-piece header.

Set-pieces proved dangerous for Huddersfield as Balker scored with seven minutes left in the first half. Preston struggled while down to ten men during that period, with the numerical disadvantage affecting their first-half play.

After the break Preston applied more pressure and, in the third minute of added time, Erabi drilled the home side level to force penalties. In the shootout Burgzorg finished with a clinical penalty after Huddersfield missed two spot-kicks and Andrew Moran had his attempt saved by Matty Young.

At Loftus Road Millwall beat QPR 2-0 on penalties after a 1-1 draw; a late own goal by Mark Sykes cancelled out Luke Cundle’s second-half opener. Millwall goalkeeper Lukas Jensen saved all four QPR spot-kicks, keeping out efforts from Ilias Chair, Harvey Vale and Koki Saito before denying Kwame Poku to seal the victory.

Cambridge recovered to win 2-1 at Barnet. Barnet took the lead four minutes after half-time when Kabongo Tshimanga tucked the rebound away after Callum Perry and Kell Watts had blocked on the line; that advantage lasted three minutes as Ben Knight scored a deflected effort following a move involving Perry and Glenn McConnell, and debutant Isaac Heath then converted Louis Appere’s low centre five minutes later.

Preston’s shootout success knocked Huddersfield out of the Carabao Cup, while Millwall and Cambridge also progressed by winning their respective ties.
