Carlos Alcaraz equals Pete Sampras' 15-match Grand Slam hard-court run

Carlos Alcaraz became the youngest player since Pete Sampras to record 15 consecutive Grand Slam match wins on hard courts at the US Open on September 1, 2026.

Alcaraz’s current sequence began at last year’s US Open, where he captured the title. During that run he beat Reilly Opelka of the United States, Mattia Bellucci and Luciano Darderi of Italy, Arthur Rinderknech of France and Jiri Lehecka of the Czech Republic before defeating Novak Djokovic in the semi-final. In the final he overcame Jannik Sinner of Italy in four sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

In April, Alcaraz suffered a right wrist injury during an ATP Barcelona contest and withdrew from the event. The injury kept him out of competition for four months, forcing him to miss the French Open and Wimbledon. He also missed the hard-court tune-up tournaments in Montreal and Cincinnati as a result of the layoff.

Alcaraz returned to the US Open having changed his appearance, described in reports as longer hair and a fresh look. His comeback match at the tournament was completed in straight sets, and the victory lasted just over a couple of hours.

The last time Alcaraz had lost on a hard court at a Grand Slam was at the 2025 Australian Open, where Novak Djokovic beat him in four sets in the quarterfinals. Since that defeat he has won two Grand Slam titles and arrived in New York with the streak intact.

He beat Roman Safiullin of Russia 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in his latest match, and he will now face Jaime Faria of Portugal in the subsequent round.
