Carlos Alcaraz’s projected route to the Japan Open 2026 final
Carlos Alcaraz will return to Tokyo to defend his Japan Open title at the Japan Open 2026, following a successful Laver Cup campaign. The Spaniard arrives in Tokyo ahead of his first ATP 500 event since a wrist injury in Barcelona sidelined him for nearly four months.
Alcaraz helped Team Europe secure the Laver Cup title by defeating Taylor Fritz in a thrilling encounter, but he arrives in Tokyo with the memory of a fifth-set loss to Ben Shelton at the US Open 2026 still fresh. The seven-time Grand Slam champion has signalled a need to rediscover his rhythm on the forehand and serve as he seeks a return to top form; if he performs well, it will boost his confidence and send a strong message to other players that the seven-time Grand Slam champion is back at his best.
Alcaraz opens a potentially testing top half that begins with Alex Michelsen, a 22-year-old American who made his first major quarter-final at the US Open and reached the last eight in Tokyo 2024; the pair have never met. Canada’s Denis Shapovalov, who lost in the third round of the US Open before reaching the semi-final at the Chengdu Open on his return to action, is a possible quarter-final opponent; Alcaraz has beaten the Canadian in straight sets in both of their previous meetings, making that quarter final one to watch.
Third seed and 2022 champion Taylor Fritz could provide a repeat of last year’s Tokyo final if the draw aligns, after Alcaraz prevailed 6-4, 6-4 in that match. Alcaraz leads their head-to-head 6-1, with Fritz’s only victory coming at the Laver Cup 2025, a defeat Alcaraz avenged a few days ago at the same competition by edging Fritz in the deciding tie-break. Lorenzo Musetti, who opens against Wimbledon semi-finalist Arthur Fery, and a returning Rune coming back from an Achilles injury round out potential opponents in that section.
The bottom half contains significant American presence, with second seed Frances Tiafoe opening against local favourite Kei Nishikori, who is playing in Tokyo for the last time. Nineteen-year-old Rafael Jodar, having reached a hard-court final in Washington and the Montreal semi-finals this season and sitting ninth in the Race to Turin, is another name to follow. Brandon Nakashima, fresh from a Montreal final and a Cincinnati semi-final, has yet to find a way past Alcaraz, while Jiri Lehecka has slipped outside the top 20 and holds a 3-1 head-to-head deficit to Alcaraz.
