Carrick praises Marcus Rashford’s condition after Barcelona loan as United future remains uncertain

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick praised Marcus Rashford’s attitude and physical condition after the forward returned from a season-long loan at Barcelona, Carrick told reporters on Thursday ahead of United's trip to Hull City. Despite the positive assessment, Rashford’s long-term place at Old Trafford remains unclear.
Rashford spent last season on loan at Barcelona and helped the Catalan club win the title. He had fallen out of favour under former United manager Ruben Amorim and had earlier been on loan at Aston Villa before moving to Spain. As the new Premier League season approaches, his situation has become a prominent talking point around the club.
Carrick delivered an upbeat report on Rashford’s early reintegration, quoting the forward’s return to training alongside Kobbie (Mainoo) and Licha (Lisandro Martinez) in Ireland. "It's been pretty obvious since Marcus came back training with Kobbie (Mainoo) and Licha (Lisandro Martinez) pretty much in Dublin that he's come back fantastically well," Carrick said. Rashford rejoined the squad during the club’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland and made his first pre-season appearance against AC Milan in Wroclaw last Saturday, coming on as a second-half substitute in the final pre-season fixture.
On the question of Rashford’s best role, Carrick outlined positional flexibility within the forward line and addressed a possible central role directly. "Of course he can play through the middle. He has done. I wouldn't say it's his number one position, but he can do that," Carrick said. "And I think we've got forwards that give us that flexibility right across the front line. We've used all of them pretty much in slightly different roles."
Speculation over Rashford’s club future persists, and the forward has sought less external focus on his situation, saying he wanted to concentrate on playing football without his "name being mentioned every day". United continue to pursue squad additions ahead of the September 1 transfer deadline; the club have added Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans and Brazil international Andrey Santos, while Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba has been linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Carrick’s comments present a favourable view of Rashford’s physical readiness, but they do not resolve whether he will remain at United beyond the transfer window. The club’s transfer activity will continue to shape options before September 1.
Rashford could get another chance to press his case when United begin their Premier League campaign against promoted Hull City on Saturday. He memorably scored a late winner at Hull during United's last Premier League visit in the 2016-17 season.
