Cavan Sullivan makes USA debut at 16 as Manchester City move awaits
Cavan Sullivan, the Philadelphia Union midfielder, made his senior United States debut on Saturday when he started in a 4-1 friendly win over Peru, becoming the fourth youngest player to play for the USA at 16 years and 363 days. With a little over a year to go before he can officially join Manchester City, the appearance represented a step forward in his rapid rise.
Manchester City moved to secure Sullivan's future signing in 2024 when he was 14, and he also made his MLS debut at 14. Philadelphia have eased him into senior football, and his first run of regular starts for the Union came as the 2026 MLS season resumed after the World Cup, with his first international call-up following soon afterwards.
Sullivan's output in MLS this season is substantial: he has seven goals and five assists. Six of those goals and four of those assists have come during August and September; he has scored six goals in the past six games and been named in the league's Team of the Matchday seven times, including for the past three consecutive matchdays. His performances, goals, and assists since the World Cup put him up there with the MLS's top individual stars, including Lionel Messi, Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez.
There is an ongoing complication linked to his future club: he made his international debut the day after Manchester City were found guilty of breaking the majority of the 115 financial rules they were accused of breaching. The club are expected to appeal.
Sullivan's fuller integration into the first team has coincided with a marked turnaround for the Philadelphia Union. Interim coach Ryan Richter took charge before the post-World Cup run-in, and the club are unbeaten in 11 games, winning nine, after a season start in which they won one game in 15.
In matches for the Union he has been used on the right side of attacking midfield with the license to drift centrally and cut inside onto his stronger left foot. Observers note a good all-round game and strength relative to his age; he is described as not quite at the level an emerging Wayne Rooney was as a teenager at Everton but possessing physicality that allows him to hold his own in MLS.
Jonathan Tannenwald, chief soccer correspondent for the Philadelphia Inquirer, commented on the wider expectations around young American players: "It's well known that Americans are drawn to stars in sports, and as the World Cup showed, that applies to soccer too." He added, "I'm not going to say today that Cavan Sullivan is going to be that player. It's too early to know for certain, and I've seen plenty of names not make the grade." Tannenwald also said, "What I will say about Sullivan is he has the work ethic to go with the talent." Richter emphasised the player's mentality, saying: 'His outstanding quality is the mentality that he has, and the way that he approaches every game and every day, and that's what pushes him to get better and better.' Sullivan's older brother Quinn, 22, also plays for the Union, and his parents Brendan and Heike both played soccer; his grandfather Larry played in the 1960s and later became a well-known coach in the Philadelphia region.
He will not be able to join Manchester City officially for a little over a year, and the club are expected to pursue an appeal against the recent ruling that was announced the day before his international debut.
