Champions League: Silva inspires Real Madrid 4-1 win as LASK shock Sporting

Real Madrid defeated RB Leipzig 4-1 and LASK stunned Sporting at the Estádio José Alvalade in Champions League action on Wednesday. The matchday also featured Galatasaray’s 4-2 victory over Lille at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy and Inter’s 1-0 win against Shakhtar Donetsk.
Real Madrid recorded a third Champions League win in as many matches for José Mourinho’s side, with Bernardo Silva opening the scoring from close range towards the end of a tight first half and Arda Guler doubling the lead early in the second half. Kylian Mbappé then bent home a third and Tidiam Gomis reduced the deficit for Leipzig before Yan Diomande volleyed into the top corner late on to complete the 4-1 scoreline. Mbappé has scored in each of Madrid’s Champions League matches this season and has 12 goals in 12 games.
LASK came from behind to claim their first Champions League victory of the season at the Estádio José Alvalade after Luis Suárez converted a penalty after five minutes. Christoph Lang equalised 10 minutes later and the visitors then moved 3-1 ahead through Sasa Kalajdzic, who rounded off a smart team move, and Krystof Danek, who fired in at the near post. Suárez scored again late for Sporting, but it was not enough.
Galatasaray opened the scoring after two minutes through Yunus Akgun at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy before Soriba Diaoune levelled and put Lille 2-1 up in the 39th minute. Aleksey Batrakov made it 2-2 just before half-time, and an own goal from Nabil Bentaleb followed by Victor Osimhen — in action against his former club — completed a 4-2 win for Galatasaray.
Inter Milan secured a 1-0 home victory over Shakhtar Donetsk despite Alessandro Bastoni being sent off midway through the second half for two yellow cards in as many minutes. Carlos Augusto finished a lightning-fast counterattack in the 77th minute to provide the only goal and give Inter their first points of the league phase.
Real Betis beat Feyenoord 1-0 from the penalty spot after Jeremiah St Juste was adjudged to have handled in the box; Isco stepped up and fired low into the right-hand corner for the winner. Club Brugge defeated Lens 3-0 at the Jan Breydel Stadium, Hans Vanaken scoring in first-half stoppage time before Joaquin Seys and Carlos Forbs added second-half goals.
“We know every point is important to get into the top eight, we know we have to win as many games as possible – we’ve won three and there are five to go,” Mbappé said, a remark that underlines Real Madrid’s current run; Real Betis have also made it three wins from three, while LASK registered their first victory of the campaign and Inter collected their first points in the group stage.
