Chelsea sets Friday 17:00 BST deadline for Enzo Fernandez as Man City weigh move
Chelsea set a deadline of Friday at 17:00 BST for offers for Enzo Fernandez, whom the club value at £120m, a timetable that could force Manchester City to decide on a potential summer transfer. City manager Enzo Maresca said on Friday: "I don't think we're going to do something today," but that does not mean they will not start to make their move behind closed doors.
The potential transfer would reunite Fernandez with Maresca, who managed him at Chelsea, and comes after City completed a big-money midfield signing this summer in Nottingham Forest's Elliot Anderson for £116m. Reports say City are unlikely to pursue Fernandez if Spain midfielder Rodri remains, with the deal appearing linked to City selling Rodri — described in coverage as the Spanish World Cup-winner — to Barcelona. Manchester City are asking 80m euros (£68.4m) for Rodri while Barcelona's opening bid was reported at £38.5m.
BBC Sport's Simon Stone has said the Rodri and Fernandez moves are dependent on each other but do not have to conclude simultaneously, and a Fernandez signing could happen before Rodri is available again following a minor back procedure. Maresca has shown clear preference for Fernandez, having made him Chelsea captain while Reece James was injured and selecting him in 79 of his 92 games in charge.
Fernandez is naturally a defensive midfielder but was pushed further forward last season when Cole Palmer was injured, producing a career-best 15 goals. That positional flexibility is relevant to City’s recruitment: Anderson, like Fernandez, has been used in multiple midfield roles and the club have also been linked with Lille's Ayyoub Bouaddi.
City's summer activity has been extensive beyond Anderson, with the club signing youngsters Pierce Charles, Jeremy Monga and Mathys Detourbet and back-up keeper Geronimo Rulli, moves the coverage says push their spending this summer past £250m. The reporting adds that, with January signings of Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi costing £82.5m, City’s outlay for 2026 would be approaching £350m.
Fernandez’s relationship with Chelsea deteriorated after Maresca left in January; in March he criticised the club after a heavy defeat by Paris St-Germain and said his dream was to move to Madrid, comments that led to Chelsea dropping him for two games. Real Madrid released a statement last month saying they would not be signing Fernandez, leaving Manchester City as the only real contenders. Chelsea reporter Nizaar Kinsella said: "There is no doubt that, because of Maresca, there is bad blood between Chelsea and Manchester City and losing Fernandez to the Sky Blues would add another chapter to the story." Kinsella added: "Maresca's mid-season exit was disruptive and unsettled players in the squad, including Fernandez himself, and led to a lengthy legal dispute that ultimately saw Chelsea receive £17.2m in compensation." He also said: "The Italian had twice attracted interest from City before walking out on Chelsa. Ultimately, Maresca got his move but was also forced to apologise on Instagram and pay an undisclosed sum to Chelsea."
Chelsea will need to identify a replacement if Fernandez departs and, according to the reporting, the club’s 17:00 BST deadline would leave them just over two weeks to act. Three weeks ago the Blues had a £64m offer for Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott rejected; Chelsea have already spent past £300m this summer, including a club-record £117m for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, plus £52m for Maxence Lacroix and £47m for Marco Palestra, and selling Fernandez would push their sales total beyond £250m.
If Fernandez were to join City for £120m it would rank as the fourth biggest transfer in football history, the coverage states, and would mean City had made two of the biggest six signings this summer; Elliot Anderson currently ranks fifth on that list. Fernandez previously moved to Chelsea from Benfica in February 2023 for £107m, placing him inside the top 10 of reported transfers. The reports also note multiple departures from City this summer, including players leaving on free transfers such as Bernardo Silva and John Stones, the sale of James Trafford to Leeds for up to £45m, and Tijjani Reijnders being set to join Saudi Pro-League outfit Al-Qadsiah in a £52m deal.
The BBC report describes Chelsea’s Friday deadline as "just an arbitrary one Chelsea have set City - or any other team - to make an offer for Fernandez," and reminds readers that the actual transfer window deadline is Tuesday, 1 September at 23:00 BST. Chelsea reporter Nizaar Kinsella said insiders insist the chance will be gone and Fernandez will stay until next summer if City do not make their move on Friday, and "it is seen as a win-win for Chelsea, who either keep their player or bank £120m."
