Chelsea sign Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano in five-year deal worth about £16.3m
Chelsea have signed left-back Pep Chavarria from Rayo Vallecano on 12 August 2026, completing a five-year contract reportedly worth about £16.3m plus a further £1.7m in add-ons that takes him to Stamford Bridge. "I'm so excited to get started," the 28-year-old said. "This is a dream for me as Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world. It is a big opportunity but I am prepared and will work hard to help the team achieve success."
Chavarria's rise to Chelsea followed an unconventional path: born in Figueres, he played for his hometown side before moving to Olot and built his reputation in Spain's lower tiers. A move to Real Zaragoza in 2020 gave him two seasons in Spain's second division and led to his La Liga breakthrough in 2022 — he did not make his top-flight debut until the age of 24 — after which he spent four years at Rayo Vallecano.
At Rayo Vallecano Chavarria became a regular on the left of defence, making 125 appearances for the club and 45 last season, when he scored once and provided three assists in all competitions. Statistical outputs cited by Rayo include 27 chances created from open play in La Liga, and he developed a reputation for defensive aggression combined with the physicality required for the role.
One performance that attracted attention came in a goalless draw with Real Madrid at Vallecas in November, when he "produced an excellent defensive performance - showing the aggression and discipline required to deal with elite attacking players." That display reportedly left an impression on Xabi Alonso, and Chavarria later became a key target for Alonso after he was appointed Chelsea manager.
Chavarria also started for Rayo in last season's Conference League final, which they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace. His arrival at Chelsea follows the club's signing of right-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta for £47m in July and comes after Marc Cucurella left for Real Madrid in June for £51.8m, giving manager Alonso additional options for a wing-back system.
Negotiations were described as "complicated" by multiple BBC Sport sources after Rayo initially insisted Chavarria would not be sold unless his release clause — now worth £42.4m — was met. Rayo maintained the valuation on the basis that his underlying statistics compare with Cucurella; Chavarria had four years remaining on his contract, and the club's profitable player-trading model and a 25% tax charge on any additional profit generated from a sale were cited as factors that reduced the net value of offers. Rayo signed him for less than £2m.
Chavarria's signing adds depth to Chelsea's left-back options and gives Alonso the personnel to pursue the wing-back approach he favoured, arriving alongside Palestra and following Cucurella's departure to Real Madrid for £51.8m.
