Chinmay Sutar follows unbeaten 400 with 125 for Mizoram in Ranji Plate Group

Chinmay Sutar scored 125 for Mizoram against Meghalaya in the Plate Group Ranji Trophy fixture at the Gokulbhai Somabhai Patel Stadium in Nadiad on October 29, 2026, adding to a remarkable start to the season that included an unbeaten 400 earlier in the competition. The 29-year-old's century was his second successive hundred and moved his four-innings aggregate to 659 runs.
Sutar struck 125 off 215 balls and hit 12 fours in the Nadiad innings, registering back-to-back hundreds following his record-breaking quadruple century. His tally of 659 runs in his first four first-class innings eclipsed Australia's Will Ponsford, who compiled 616 in his first four first-class outings more than a century ago.
Earlier in the campaign, Sutar produced an unbeaten 400 against Nagaland at Sovima, an innings compiled off 517 deliveries with 46 fours and seven sixes. That quadruple century left him as only the second player to reach 400 in a Ranji Trophy innings, behind Bhausaheb Nimbalkar's unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in the 1948-49 season.
Sutar's 400 placed him among just ten batters in first-class history to reach 400 in an innings, a list that includes Brian Lara, Don Bradman and Will Ponsford. The 400 has been cited alongside those names in records of first-class quadruple centuries.
Sutar began his first-class career earlier this month against Manipur with scores of 35 and 99, the latter ended by a run out that denied him a maiden hundred. He then converted that near-miss into the unbeaten 400 at Sovima and followed it with the 125 for Mizoram against Meghalaya.
A Mumbai cricketer by background, Sutar moved to Mizoram ahead of the 2026-27 season after finding limited red-ball opportunities in Mumbai's setup; he had represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Mizoram provided the platform for regular first-class appearances, and Sutar has responded with a sequence of high scores.
The 400 included an unbroken last-wicket stand of 190 runs with Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak, a partnership that featured in the makeup of his quadruple century. That stand was part of the innings that pushed him into rarefied first-class company.
Sutar's aggregate across his first four first-class innings now stands at 659 runs.
