Chinmay Sutar hits unbeaten 400 for Mizoram in Ranji Trophy

Chinmay Sutar scored an unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima on Monday, October 19, in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy. He is 29 years old.
Sutar, a right-handed batter born in Mumbai, moved to Mizoram ahead of the 2026-27 season after previously representing Mumbai in domestic competitions. He also featured for India Emerging in the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh, where he recorded a century.
Sutar’s unbeaten 400 came off 517 balls and included 46 fours and seven sixes; Mizoram reached 581/9 before declaring. The innings was compiled in the match against Nagaland at Sovima and ended with Sutar remaining not out.
The knock moved Sutar past Prithvi Shaw’s previous Ranji best of 379 and placed him second on the list of highest individual scores in Ranji Trophy history. He became only the second player to reach 400 in a Ranji innings after Bhausaheb Babasaheb Nimbalkar, whose unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948 remains the competition record.
Sutar is the 12th batter to score 400 or more in a first-class innings; the overall first-class record remains Brian Lara’s unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994. Earlier in his Mizoram career, Sutar made his first-class debut against Manipur, scoring 35 in the first innings and 99 in the second before being run out.
His cricketing background includes List A appearances for Mumbai and spells playing club cricket in England, and his father, Raju Sutar, is a former Mumbai first-class cricketer who played during the same era as Sachin Tendulkar.
The 400 not out stands out among headline performances in the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season, underlining the tournament’s role in producing notable individual displays this campaign.
