Christos Tzolis sets up two as Arsenal beat Coventry 3-0 in season opener

In London on Friday, August 21, 2026, Arsenal opened their Premier League title defence with a 3-0 win over promoted Coventry City, with newcomer Christos Tzolis creating the first two goals in the season opener.
Arsenal entered the match as defending champions after ending a 22-year wait for the Premier League title and were reported to have dominated Frank Lampard's side, who returned to the top flight after a 25-year absence following a Championship-winning campaign last season. The contest was one-sided from the start, with Coventry described as looking outmatched as Arsenal repeatedly took them apart.
Tzolis, the only summer signing to start for Arsenal, robbed possession to find Riccardo Calafiori, whose pass was squared for Kai Havertz to score in the 15th minute. In the 23rd minute Tzolis delivered a cross from the left that goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry into the path of Bukayo Saka, who finished into an empty net.
Captain Martin Odegaard added Arsenal's third shortly after the break when his scuffed shot looped over Rushworth and into the net; Odegaard gave an apologetic shrug as he celebrated. "It was not the best finish but I was there,” Odegaard said.
Odegaard also praised Tzolis's contribution after the match, saying: "Amazing, he played a brilliant game," Odegaard said of Tzolis. "He has been brilliant all preseason. He's so lively, it's hard to defend him. He's a really intelligent player, he always looks up and finds the right pass." The report noted Tzolis is a Greece international and operates on the left.
Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya was rarely tested; the only notable attempt described before halftime was a speculative overhead kick from Loum Tchaouna that sailed high of the bar in the 42nd minute. Coventry's sole effort on target came in the 86th minute when Jack Rudoni's header was weak and straight at Raya, and Arsenal were said to have spurned chances to increase the scoreline further.
Before kickoff Arsenal introduced their latest signing, England defender Ezri Konsa, after he completed a move from Aston Villa earlier on Friday.
The victory delivered three points in Arsenal's opening Premier League match as they began their title defence — "The perfect start," Odegaard said.
