Churchill Brothers defeated Mumbai City FC 2-1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Fatorda, Goa in the fourth game of the opening matchweek of the Indian Super League 2026-27 season on October 12, 2026. Gaurav Bora and Sebastian scored for Churchill, while Sergio Llamas converted a late penalty for Mumbai City.

Mumbai began the match on the front foot with Brandon Fernandes and Wilmar Jordan Gil creating early chances, and Churchill also threatened in the first half with Lekay coming close, but the teams went in level at the break. The deadlock was broken in the second half when Gaurav Bora scored a header — recorded as Churchill’s first-ever ISL goal — and later Sebastian struck in the 87th minute to extend the lead. Manolo Marquez introduced Lazar Cirkovic and Farukh as Mumbai searched for a response; a late penalty for the Islanders was converted by Sergio Llamas, leaving the final score 2-1.

Churchill’s goalkeeper Kadir dealt with sustained pressure in the opening 45 minutes and produced a crucial save to deny Brandon Fernandes, helping keep Mumbai from scoring in the first half. Mumbai created a number of opportunities through Brandon, Wilmar Jordan Gil and Otormin but lacked the finishing required to force an early lead. Kadir’s intervention was the clearest single stop mentioned as preventing an opener.

Salou anchored Churchill’s midfield, controlling tempo and pace while building attacks from deeper positions and winning ground and aerial duels. Angou handled several set pieces but they generated few genuine scoring opportunities; he also contributed defensively and conceded the late penalty that gave Mumbai a route back into the match. The description of their midfield work emphasised physicality and tempo control as central to Churchill’s approach.

Player ratings and individual defensive assessments were provided for several players: Alexandre Primael Yeoule – 6/10, who was replaced by Gaurav Bora; Anil Rama Gaonkar – 7/10; and M Deny Singh – 6/10, with Rehnesh described as having a decent outing but criticised for positioning on both goals conceded and for the corner that led to the opener. Melroy received praise for his defensive display and Assisi was noted for closing down chances from Wilmar and Brandon.

Mumbai’s defensive and midfield performances drew mixed reviews: Mishra was described as having a very poor outing as the new captain, struggling with long ball distribution and failing to mark Gaurav Bora; Delgado was judged composed and looking to maintain defensive shape; Chhetri had a relatively quiet game and did not track back in time for Churchill’s second goal. Valpuia was assessed as solid defensively but limited going forward, while Tluanga was rated as average with several misplaced passes.

Mumbai’s attacking players and substitutes were appraised individually: Brandon was faulted for wasteful set-piece deliveries and for missing a clear chance fired directly at the goalkeeper; Otormin and Jordan Gil were described as sluggish with limited attacking impact, though Jordan Gil produced one notable pass to Brandon Fernandes. Cirkovic was steady after coming on; Farukh showed glimpses but had limited time to influence the match; Puipuia had brief involvement and was noted for not tracking back for the second Churchill goal; Hridaya produced an encouraging cameo and won the penalty that gave Mumbai a late opportunity.
