Cole Palmer plays against Manchester United after serving one-match ban

Cole Palmer featured for Chelsea in the Premier League meeting with Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday despite being sent off in Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur the previous weekend. He had been shown two yellow cards in that Tottenham game, the second for a late charge on Conor Gallagher.
Under English Football Association (FA) regulations, a one-match punishment is automatically imposed for a sending-off that follows two yellow cards, while red card suspensions apply across domestic competitions, including the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL (Carabao) Cup. By contrast, sanctions arising from accumulating yellow cards are confined to the tournament in which those cautions were received.
Four days after the Tottenham match, on Wednesday night Chelsea travelled to face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fourth round. Palmer was suspended for one game and watched on as Chelsea were eliminated from the competition following a penalty shootout.
Having served that one-match ban during the midweek cup tie, Palmer was eligible for Chelsea’s Premier League home fixture against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. He returned to the starting lineup for that Saturday match, following his absence from the Carabao Cup tie that ended Chelsea’s participation in the tournament.
The forward, 24, has registered two goals and three assists in eight league matches this season. Chelsea are seeking an improved campaign under their new manager after a difficult previous season.
