Comebacks, fly-hacks and cornrows - Premiership talking points

Brendan Venter's Saracens, Santi Carreras' Bath and Henry Pollock's Northampton all made winning starts to their Premiership seasons this weekend. Saracens edged Leicester 40-38, Bath prevailed at Harlequins courtesy of a remarkable Santi Carreras try, and Pollock marked his 50th Saints appearance in Northampton's win over Newcastle Red Bulls.

At Saracens' St Albans training ground in pre-season, returning director of rugby Brendan Venter told his squad: "I don't want to be competitive in this league," adding, "I want to dominate." Since their return from the Championship, no club has racked up more regular-season Premiership points over the last five campaigns than Saracens, yet they narrowly missed out on the play-offs in each of the past two seasons. The squad has been bolstered by new signings and experienced performers, with Tomos Williams influential at scrum-half on the opening day.

Saracens' win at Leicester was hard-fought: Olly Hartley left the field injured in the first half and Nick Isiekwe received a 20-minute red card in the second, reducing Sarries to 14 men as the lead changed hands four times in the final half hour before the 40-38 finish. Ben Earl, initially deployed in the centres in a rejigged backline, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "We've worked a lot more on our mental game, our ability to deal with setbacks, to keep sticking to our process when things don't go our way," and added, "Maybe a different Sarries team from the last couple of years would probably have dropped away in different points in that, but we kept fighting away and finding a way."

The match also underlined Saracens' emerging depth: second row Olamide Sodeke, 21, came on and contributed to a significant front-five effort in the final quarter, while 22-year-old Nathan Michelow, part of England's 2024 under-20 World Cup winning side, is pushing for a starting spot in a packed back row.

The try of the round arrived 32 minutes into Bath's win at Harlequins when Tyrone Green's intended scoring pass to Oscar Beard was intercepted by Santi Carreras, who lunged foot-first between the two, sent the ball high, chased, gathered one-handed and raced in under the sticks. The source noted the risk involved: "Had Carreras gone with a hand and knocked on, he was likely looking at a penalty try and a sin-binning, given the lack of cover behind."

Gloucester's victory at Exeter combined new coaching hires and a forward-heavy platform: Brett Deacon and Joel Tomkins were brought in from Leicester and Catalan Dragons respectively, and club legends including Mike Teague were used to set a hard-nosed tone. Val Rapava Ruskin started at loose-head, Dewi Lake produced a player-of-the-match showing on debut, and the pack included Afolabi Fasogbon, Jean Kleyn and Arthur Clark alongside carriers such as Jac Morgan, Freddie Thomas and Will Trenholm. The opening round also highlighted the Welsh presence across the Premiership and several notable attacking returns: Tomos Williams and Aaron Wainwright featured for Saracens and Leicester respectively, Wainwright led an all-Welsh Tigers back row with Olly Cracknell and Tommy Reffel, Gabriel Hamer-Webb scored a hat-trick for the hosts, Louis Rees-Zammit grabbed two in Bristol's win at Sale, and Dewi Lake recorded a brace for Gloucester in their win over Exeter. The summer's debate about an Anglo-Welsh league saw positive responses from Rob Baxter, Pat Lam and George Skivington, and younger players such as Bath's Louie Hennessey, Harlequins' Bryn Bradley, Exeter's Kane James and Sale's Christ Tshiunza were noted as promising talents.

Henry Pollock's new haircut provided a lighter subplot as he celebrated his 50th Saints appearance in Friday's win over Newcastle Red Bulls; team-mate Chunya Munga joked, "It's not a gender reveal bro, you just got cornrows!" Pollock also covered 81 metres, "the third-highest total of anyone on the pitch, off 13 carries."

Dewi Lake emphasised continuity after Gloucester's victory, saying, "The important thing is that it's not one and done for us," and Gloucester's next assignment is a home match against Quins on Saturday.
