Commonwealth Games flag handed to Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel as Ahmedabad begins 2030 preparations

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel received the Commonwealth Games flag in Gandhinagar on Wednesday as Ahmedabad began preparations to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games. Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi handed the flag to Patel following his return from Glasgow.

The handover took place during a cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar and marks the start of the state's preparations for the event. Sanghavi was part of the Indian delegation at Sunday's closing ceremony in Glasgow, where the Commonwealth Games Federation formally passed the flag to India. He attended that ceremony alongside Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Indian Olympic Association president P. T. Usha.

Gujarat's para-athletes Rakesh Bhatt and Rohit Majgul, who competed at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, were present in Gandhinagar for the occasion. Para table tennis player Sonal Patel also attended as the state marked the symbolic start of its journey towards hosting the Games.

"Extending my heartiest congratulations to all our incredible athletes and para-athletes who made Bharat proud with their outstanding 39-medal tally in Glasgow. Their grit and passion continue to inspire us as we gear up to make CWG 2030 a historic success," read the statement by Gujarat CM on X.

Speaking to reporters after landing at Ahmedabad Airport on Wednesday, Sanghavi said: "These Games will be organised with grandeur and with the best possible arrangements for the athletes. They will be conducted in such a way that every athlete can deliver his best performance," the Deputy CM said.

Ahmedabad was officially confirmed as the host city for the 2030 CWG in November 2025. This will be the second time that India will be hosting the Games after the first one took place in Delhi in 2010.
