Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 at CBS Arena to end 25-year wait for home top-flight win

Coventry City beat Newcastle United 4-1 at the CBS Arena in the Premier League on 12 October 2026, delivering their first home top-flight goal and victory in 25 years. Jack Rudoni opened the scoring from the penalty spot and paid tribute to his grandmother, who was in hospital after a heart attack last week.
The Sky Blues recorded their first four-goal top-flight home haul since a 4-1 victory over Sheffield Wednesday in May 2000 and followed up a win at Nottingham Forest before the international break. Prior home results this season had been a 1-0 loss to Hull, a 5-0 defeat by Brighton and a 3-1 Carabao Cup loss to Aston Villa, making a strong showing at the CBS Arena imperative. After successive wins Coventry sit 14th and are level on points with Manchester United after six games, moving out of the Premier League relegation zone.
Rudoni's penalty opened the scoring, Sidiki Cherif netted on his first Premier League start, and late strikes from Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni completed the 4-1 scoreline. Cherif had won the early penalty and finished with a low strike from outside the box, his first in his fourth appearance for the club. At 19-years-old and 301 days old, Cherif is Coventry's youngest Premier League goalscorer since Robbie Keane against Middlesbrough in April 2000 (19y 282d). He is also the first player to score a Premier League goal from outside the box for the Sky Blues since David Thompson struck against Newcastle in January 2001.
Manager Frank Lampard highlighted the result's importance for a squad with limited top-flight experience and for players developing quickly. "It's big and we have to tap into that in a good way, in a humble way," Lampard said. "A lot of players had low Premier League minutes, or zero Premier League minutes, Jack Rudoni, [Brandon] Thomas Asante, [Ephron] Mason-Clark, a lot of them."
Lampard also urged caution despite the victory, stressing the need to manage confidence. "This [win] gives good confidence, so it's the balance of confidence against overconfidence. But it's great when you have a template of feeling when you get a result of that level." He added: "We're going to be a relative underdog in pretty much every game," and "So we have to maximise everything and be on the limit and I thought we were on the limit in loads of ways." "They need to keep their feet on the ground because the next one's tough and the one after that will be tough."
Lampard had handed Cherif a first Premier League start after his summer move from Fenerbahce and spoke at length about the teenager's character. "We've got a lot of belief in Sidi, a big signing for the club," Lampard said. "He's very respectful but there's a hunger that flicks on when he goes on to the training pitch and in game. I felt it from our first meeting and I've seen it in training, he wants to train and do well. "Sometimes you don't realise he's 19. He'll be disappointed with the one he missed and I've said to him it's no problem because that's good. You get there, you get hungry, you go again. He's got that little edge to him in a good way." Lampard added: "Sidi has played in European competition with Fenerbahce, so there is something about him that hopefully feels like he belongs on the level. "There's something about him I think is a bit special."
Coventry scored 97 goals as they won the Championship last season, and with Hadji Wright still out with a serious thigh injury much of the goalscoring burden will fall on £20m Cherif, who was not even born the last time Coventry were in the Premier League.
Coventry travel to Tottenham next and then host Fulham, both clubs described in the report as winless; fixtures against Sunderland, Everton, Crystal Palace, Leeds and Ipswich follow to take them into December.
