Coventry complete club-record signing of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi

Coventry City completed the club-record signing of Ghana midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi on 7 August 2026, the Sky Blues announced. The 20-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the club.

The transfer is reported as a fee of €27m (£23.1m) with a further €3m (£2.5m) in add-ons, with the Sky Blues believed to have paid that amount to Danish side Nordsjaelland. Yirenkyi is a product of the Right to Dream academy and joined Nordsjaelland in 2024, winning the Danish Superliga's young player of the year award last season.

He made his international debut in May 2025 and played at this summer's World Cup, scoring a stoppage-time winner in the Black Stars' group win over Panama. He has two goals from 15 appearances for Ghana.

Although primarily a midfielder, Yirenkyi has been used at right-back for both club and country. "When I spoke to the head coach about the plans and the style, it's something I really like, and I look forward to learning from him," said Yirenkyi. "I'm still young so I want to learn from the head coach, the other players and work really hard for the team."

Danish journalist Nicklas Degn, who hosts the Mediano podcast, described Yirenkyi as an "extremely exciting player" who has been "touted as the next big thing". "He's been one of the best players in the Danish Superliga in the past season and he's extremely highly regarded," Degn added. "He's a complete number eight but his versatility is underscored by the fact he's been playing in defence for much of the spring at both Nordsjaelland and for the Ghana national team."

Coventry have also completed other summer business, including signing Brighton goalkeeper Rushworth after a loan. Yirenkyi becomes Coventry's fifth summer signing after Frank Lampard led the club back into the top flight after a 25-year absence.
