Coventry beat Newcastle 4-1 at the CBS Arena in a Premier League match on 12 October 2026, with late substitutes Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni turning the contest decisively in the hosts' favour. The result was Coventry’s second successive win and moved them out of the relegation zone.

Frank Lampard’s attack-minded selection policy was on display as Coventry combined risk and reward to take control despite Newcastle enjoying long spells of possession. Newcastle, who had a strong start to the season and lost their previous game at Leeds by the same scoreline, could have risen to fourth with victory but failed to convert several presentable chances. Lampard has warned supporters to expect this approach throughout this first season back in the elite since 2000/01.

Jack Rudoni put Coventry ahead in the sixth minute from the penalty spot after Sidiki Cherif and Newcastle goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek contested a loose ball; Rudoni sent Hornicek the wrong way with a left-footed finish. The penalty followed Ephron Mason-Clark’s chase of a Brandon Thomas-Asante pass and Rudoni celebrated by lifting his shirt to display the message 'Get well soon Nan'.

Coventry were dangerous on the counter throughout and Cherif, making his first Premier League start since signing from Fenerbahce for £21m, squandered an early opportunity by shooting weakly at Hornicek when Rudoni was almost free in the middle. Coventry defender Bobby Thomas kept the lead intact before half-time, first heading a Jacob Murphy effort off the line after Harvey Barnes’ cross, then recovering to clear when Matias Fernandez-Pardo rounded Carl Rushworth and shot.

The club’s summer spending was noted in the match report: Coventry have invested £100m and carried £70m of new talent who did not start this game, while Taiwo Awoniyi, signed for £17m from Nottingham Forest, was unavailable because a three-game suspension opened the way for Cherif. Cherif scored his first Premier League goal three minutes into the second half when Malick Thiaw headed a long throw clear and Cherif’s first touch allowed him to swivel and drive a shot through four pairs of plum-coloured stockings into the net.

Newcastle reduced the deficit to 2-1 when Sven Botman belted a shot into the top corner with 20 minutes remaining, and earlier he had miscued a clearance that left Cherif unmarked and able to sidefoot wide from six yards. Ellis Simms restored a two-goal cushion in the 81st minute after Thomas-Asante nicked the ball on the edge of the area and the striker finished, and there was a late chance that struck the post for Thomas-Asante before substitute Stephen Mfuni twinkle-toed into the penalty area and struck left-footed to seal the emphatic finish.

The victory moved Coventry clear of the relegation zone and represented back-to-back Premier League wins under Lampard in their return season to the top flight.
