Chennai Super Kings CEO Kasi Viswanathan said in Chennai on October 13, 2026 that he remains hopeful MS Dhoni will play again for CSK despite Dhoni missing the entire Indian Premier League 2026 season. Dhoni, now 45, did not appear in a single match in IPL 2026 owing to multiple injury concerns.

Dhoni’s playing future with the franchise was described by Viswanathan as a decision the team has left to the veteran himself, with the player informing CSK when he arrives in Chennai. "It's a question you need to ask him. I also have to ask him. He informs us of his decision when he arrives in Chennai. I have a feeling that the chances of him continuing to play for CSK are there. He is still a player, you know," Kasi Viswanathan said.

Many observers had expected IPL 2026 to serve as Dhoni’s farewell campaign, but he stayed with the squad for most of the tournament, taking part in training sessions and supporting the team from the dugout as CSK navigated a period of transition. The veteran’s non-playing role drew criticism during the season, according to the team’s coverage.

Following CSK’s final home game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, former head coach Stephen Fleming defended Dhoni’s contributions off the field and emphasised his value to younger members of the squad. "MS has been around a lot this year, which has been really important for the team, for a lot of the young players, and for continuity," Fleming said. "So, he's been a big part of it. He hasn't played, but he's still had a big influence on the team."

Former CSK batter Suresh Raina urged Dhoni to return for another season after Dhoni joined the team’s traditional lap of honour at Chepauk, telling the veteran that IPL 2026 should not count as his final campaign. "I told him you have given IPL 2026 a missed call. It won't count. You have to come back next year," Raina said. He recalled Dhoni’s cautious reply: "He said, 'Nahi yaar, body thoda waisa hai' (No man, the body is a bit like that). I said we are not believing anything. You have to play next year."

Raina expressed some optimism about Dhoni’s stance and cited signs the wicketkeeper-batter had not closed the door on a return. "It's his personal call. I think he is positive. The team is also gelling well again. Fans also want him to come. He said, 'Let me see.' If he says let me see, there's a chance he will work hard, and play again," Raina added.

CSK have already taken steps to prepare for life beyond Dhoni by acquiring Sanju Samson from Rajasthan Royals ahead of IPL 2026; Samson played all 14 matches for Chennai and scored 477 runs in his first season with the franchise, but CSK finished eighth in the 10-team standings. Dhoni’s availability will form a central part of CSK’s planning as they assess their squad ahead of the upcoming auction.

Viswanathan’s remarks leave the door open to at least one more season for Dhoni while CSK begin preparations for the next campaign and the auction process.
