CSK set to release Prashant Veer ahead of IPL 2027 auction

On 2026-11-02, Cricbuzz reported that Chennai Super Kings are planning to release Prashant Veer ahead of the Indian Premier League 2027 auction as part of a move to free up funds.
Veer was bought by CSK at the IPL 2026 auction for INR 14.2 crore, making him the joint-most expensive uncapped player in the league. He featured in six games for CSK, scoring 90 runs in five innings with a highest score of 43 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru and failed to take a wicket, with the franchise using him sparingly with the ball.
CSK currently have Rs 2.4 crore remaining in their purse; after the annual increment of Rs 5 crore their available funds will rise to Rs 7.4 crore. According to the reports, releasing Prashant Veer would push the franchise’s purse to over 20 crore, a sum the article described as useful for acquiring additional players.
The reports also indicate that CSK are not intent on completely severing ties with Veer and may attempt to re-sign him at a lower fee, reflecting continued belief in the young Uttar Pradesh all-rounder. That possible buyback was presented as a route for the franchise to retain access to the player while restructuring salary commitments.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India has set a November 15 deadline for franchises to announce their retentions and releases ahead of the mini-auction in Goa. The auction will take place on December 16 and is described in the report as the last one of the current cycle.
CSK have made changes to their coaching setup, naming Zaheer Khan as head coach, Albie Morkel as assistant coach and Mohit Sharma as bowling coach; Zaheer Khan will be the head coach of CSK in IPL 2027. The franchise was reported to be under the spotlight entering the auction after the last few poor seasons.
With the November 15 retention and release deadline approaching and the December 16 mini-auction in Goa scheduled, CSK must confirm whether to release Prashant Veer and thereby enter the auction with the increased spending power that would follow.
