Cunha’s late leveller earns Manchester United draw as Man City edge Sunderland 5-3

Matheus Cunha's late deflected strike salvaged a 1-1 draw for Manchester United against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Sunday in a Premier League match, while Manchester City kept a perfect start under Enzo Maresca with a 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium.

The result denied United a third defeat of the week. United fell behind just past the hour mark after Lisandro Martinez put the ball into his own net when Calvin Bassey's shot came off goalkeeper Senne Lammens and rebounded off Martinez and into the net. Bruno Fernandes had earlier hit the woodwork, and Bryan Mbeumo forced a fine save from Bernd Leno. Cunha's effort took a heavy deflection before beating Leno in the 89th minute to rescue a point for United, who have now won only one of their opening five Premier League games; Fulham had appeared set for their first home league win over United since 2009 and their first league victory under new manager Alvaro Arbeloa before Cunha's intervention.

Manchester City maintained their 100 per cent start under Enzo Maresca but were pushed throughout in a 5-3 win over Sunderland. Enzo Fernandez opened the scoring for City before Brian Brobbey levelled, and Rayan Cherki restored City's lead only for Brobbey to equalise again. Brobbey scored a hat-trick and repeatedly exposed gaps in the home defence as Sunderland twice surrendered leads in the first half.

Antoine Semenyo struck twice, including a second goal in the 57th minute, to put City in front at one stage, and Brobbey then completed his hat-trick soon after by forcing the ball over the line; Ruben Dias later had to clear another Sunderland effort off the line as the visitors threatened again. Erling Haaland finally settled the contest in the 81st minute, scoring his seventh goal in his last five games. City head into the international break three points clear of second-placed Arsenal, with Maresca left to consider his side's defensive showing.

Alexander Isak's 57th-minute goal secured a 1-0 win for Liverpool at Bournemouth. Isak reacted quickest after a Cody Gakpo run down the right and a loose ball following Florian Wirtz's challenge to slot home his fourth league goal of the season. Liverpool managed only six efforts on goal; Wirtz had another quiet outing while Gakpo and Bradley Barcola provided the primary attacking threat. The clean sheet and three points kept Liverpool unbeaten as they went into the international break.
