Daniels’ overtime scramble costs Commanders as Giants salvage 27-27 tie

Jayden Daniels’ ill-timed overtime scramble left the Washington Commanders unable to stop the clock and the teams settled for a 27-27 tie with the New York Giants at Northwest Stadium in NFL action on Sunday.
Washington regained possession in overtime after Daron Payne stripped the ball from Cam Skattebo with two minutes remaining, and Daniels quickly advanced the Commanders to the Giants’ 24-yard line; with 12 seconds left and no timeouts he was tackled for no gain, the team lined up to spike the ball but the clock reached zero and coach Dan Quinn ripped off his headset in frustration.
Washington had led by two touchdowns late in the fourth quarter after Daniels threw for 199 yards and rushed for 103 yards and two scores while wearing a brace on his left elbow in his first game back since dislocating it for the second time in Week 2, but Jameis Winston mounted a comeback, finishing with 326 passing yards and three touchdowns as the Giants rallied.
Isaiah Likely caught a 17-yard touchdown midway through the fourth — his second of the game — and Malik Nabers hauled in a 17-yard tying score with 1:43 remaining; Nabers finished with 11 catches for 121 yards and a touchdown while Likely had 11 receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns, one of which stood after a replay review despite the ball being punched out after crossing the goal line.
Dominic Zvada converted only two of five field-goal attempts for the Giants, and the Giants’ offense, which had struggled in the first half, produced scores on four straight possessions late; the Commanders’ defense had allowed Daniels to rush for two second-half touchdowns — a 38-yard run in the third quarter and a 26-yard score in the fourth — and Washington’s final drive in regulation stalled at midfield.
In other results, the New England Patriots routed the Las Vegas Raiders 45-17 as Drake Maye completed 26 of 34 passes for 374 yards, threw four touchdown passes, ran for a three-yard touchdown and had his first turnover-free game of the season; Pop Douglas caught two touchdowns and Hunter Henry and Kyle Williams added one apiece while Rhamondre Stevenson had a touchdown run and New England finished with a season-high 536 yards.
The New York Jets edged the Cleveland Browns 17-12 after Braelon Allen’s 22-yard go-ahead touchdown late in the fourth; rookie David Bailey had three of New York’s eight sacks on Deshaun Watson, Geno Smith completed 17 of 30 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown to Garrett Wilson (seven catches for 104 yards), and Will McDonald strip-sacked Watson on fourth down to seal the win.
The Pittsburgh Steelers beat the Indianapolis Colts 34-22 as Jaylen Warren totaled 188 yards and two long touchdowns (an 80-yard catch-and-run and a 50-yard rush) and Aaron Rodgers completed 22 of 31 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns; Pat Freiermuth added five catches for 44 yards and two scores, the latter a 17-yard touchdown with 6:40 remaining that provided the margin of victory.
Joe Burrow threw four touchdown passes and Cincinnati’s safety Jordan Battle recorded two interceptions as the Bengals downed the Miami Dolphins 31-24; Ja’Marr Chase caught six passes for 77 yards including a one-handed 45-yard touchdown, Burrow completed 23 of 32 passes for 190 yards and touchdowns to Mike Gesicki, Tanner Hudson and Samaje Perine, and the Dolphins’ Riley Patterson struck the left upright on the extra point before Cincinnati recovered the onside-kick mistake to snap a two-game skid.
The weekend left Minnesota and San Francisco unbeaten at 5-0, with the Vikings’ 23-13 win over New Orleans featuring Justin Jefferson’s leaping touchdown and Aaron Jones’ 113 rushing yards, while Tennessee and Miami fell to 0-5; Washington moved to 1-3-1 and the Giants to 3-1-1 following the tie.
