Data show Bruno Guimarães’ £75m Arsenal transfer driven by set-piece and free-kick metrics
Bruno Guimarães completed a £75m transfer to Arsenal on 8 August 2026, a move that has been linked directly to his Premier League data for winning free-kicks and scoring from set pieces. Statistical evidence from his time in England underpins the case made for the signing.
The fee makes Guimarães the most expensive transfer for a midfielder aged at least 28, eclipsing a record last held by Zinedine Zidane, who moved from Juventus to Real Madrid 25 years ago. The deal has been framed as a short-term acquisition: Guimarães is 28 and will be in his 30s before the end of next year. Arsenal value his availability and versatility; he rarely misses matches and can occupy any role across midfield in the 4-3-3 Mikel Arteta often deploys, attributes noted alongside concerns over Declan Rice’s long-term nerve pain in his hamstring and Martin Ødegaard completing only 40% of possible Premier League minutes last season.
Guimarães is also adept at breaking up attacks, an attribute that addresses a clear vulnerability in Arsenal’s game: Opta recorded Arsenal misplacing 1,492 passes in the final third last season, the fourth most in the Premier League. That level of turnover creates counter-attacking exposure, and the club’s set-piece production makes a player who can win fouls and score from dead-ball situations strategically valuable.
Defensive aggression is part of his profile: Guimarães was penalised for 45 fouls in the league last season, a total he reached in each of his four full campaigns with Newcastle. Only Moisés Caicedo also recorded 45 or more fouls in each of the previous four Premier League seasons. Since making his Newcastle debut in February 2022 he has committed the fourth most fouls in the competition, yet nine players have received more yellow cards than him in that period.
On the other side of the foul equation, Guimarães has been exceptional at winning free-kicks. He suffered 410 fouls in the Premier League, more than 100 more than anyone else during his time in England. Outside England, only Lazio winger Mattia Zaccagni (418) has been credited with more free-kicks won; on a pro-rata basis Vinicius Júnior sits a fraction ahead with 2.95 fouls drawn per 90 minutes to Guimarães’s 2.89, and Arsenal were reported to have pursued Vinicius as well. Guimarães finished no lower than second in the Premier League for fouls suffered in each of the previous four seasons, twice leading the standings across England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
Those won fouls have translated into set-piece returns: only two players have scored more set-piece goals than Guimarães in the Premier League since early 2022, and Arsenal already own one of those players. His total of 12 goals is the joint-most by a midfielder or forward in that timeframe, and his transfer brings him together at the Emirates with fellow Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhães.
Newcastle lost more than one key player this summer: Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, who were both among Newcastle’s top four for free-kicks won last season, also left the club. Their combined foul total was less than Guimarães’s total and neither scored from a set piece, a contrast that underlines the specific set-piece and fouls-won profile Arsenal have acquired.
