Davies strike secures Tottenham’s first win of the season with 3-1 home victory over Coventry

Tottenham beat Coventry 3-1 at home in the Premier League on 19 October 2026, earning their first victory of the season and moving out of the bottom three.
Roberto De Zerbi’s side recorded only their sixth Premier League home win since November 2024, a rare positive after a resolute draw at Manchester United last week. James Maddison returned to the starting lineup for the first time in 536 days and opened the scoring, while Dejan Kulusevski was included in the squad after sustaining a knee injury in May 2025. The match also featured Omar Marmoush, who scored after joining Coventry on loan from Manchester City.
De Zerbi started with a back three, deploying Mohammed Kudus as an attacking right wing-back and pairing Archie Gray with Sandro Tonali in midfield; Coventry had the early chance when Tatsuhiro Sakamoto’s deflected effort flew over the bar. Kudus drove past Jay Dasilva and fed Maddison, who bent a 25-yard right‑footed shot past Carl Rushworth to put Spurs ahead — Maddison’s first goal since the Europa League semi-final against Bodø/Glimt on 1 May 2025. Coventry supporters booed Maddison throughout, apparently in response to his departure from his boyhood club 10 years earlier.
Spurs failed to impose a fluent first-half rhythm and Dominic Solanke threatened with a header over, while a slick exchange between Sidiki Cherif and Brandon Thomas‑Asante reminded Tottenham the game was still in contention. Thomas‑Asante burst past Jan Paul van Hecke and looked set to test Antonin Kinsky before Micky van de Ven produced a crucial intervention to block the move. A sluggish start to the second half saw Van Hecke lose possession, allowing Jack Rudoni to push down the left, combine with Caleb Yirenkyi and, after an initial shot off Thomas‑Asante, retrieve and chest the ball down to jab a finish beyond Kinsky and draw Coventry level.
Spurs responded by raising intensity; Tonali fired two efforts over the bar as the home side pressed for a lead. Omar Marmoush restored Tottenham’s advantage in the 59th minute with a powerful effort, but the goal was contentious after Marmoush made contact with Milan van Ewijk with an elbow and play was allowed to continue. Referee Andrew Madley permitted the goal to stand, Paul Tierney as video assistant referee took no action, and the away fans reacted with astonishment when the strike was replayed on the big screens.
De Zerbi sought fresh energy from the bench, introducing Mateus Fernandes and Conor Gallagher, while Kulusevski made his first appearance after more than a season out. In added time, Ben Davies, brought on as a substitute, drilled home Tottenham’s third to seal the 3-1 victory and draw a relieved response from the home crowd.
The result moved Coventry into 17th place in the table and gave Tottenham their first league win of the campaign; Spurs will hope the positive outcome builds momentum after recent struggles.
