Davis Cup: India 0-2 down to Korea after Nagal and Dhakshineswar losses in Seoul

India trailed South Korea 0-2 after the opening day of their Davis Cup second-round qualifier in Seoul on September 18, 2026, as Sumit Nagal and Dhakshineswar Suresh both surrendered early advantages in singles rubbers.

Dhakshineswar lost the opening match of his Davis Cup career when Korea's number one Soonwoo Kwon beat him 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, and India number one Sumit Nagal fell 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 to Hyeon Chung after a match that lasted more than three hours. The Koreans' performances meant Kwon extended his unbeaten Davis Cup record at home, and India finished the day needing to win all three rubbers on the final day to reach the knockout stage.

Nagal began aggressively, frequently attempting inside-out forehands, and forced Chung into numerous unforced errors early on; he broke in the first game and moved to a 4-0 lead after Chung twice handed away points. Chung recovered one break in the sixth game but dropped the service again, and Nagal closed out the opening set when Chung's return sailed long.

Chung regrouped in the second set, improving his movement, charging the net and deploying drop shots; a seven-deuce exchange in game seven saw Nagal eventually prevail but he then lost his serve in the following game with a double fault and a netted forehand to let the set level at 4-4. Serving to stay in the set, Nagal produced a long forehand before Chung hit a return winner and an overhead volley that produced a set point; Nagal netted a backhand return after a long rally to hand Chung the second set.

In the decider Nagal trailed 1-3 after an early break but fought back to 5-5; Chung ultimately took the final two games to close out a 6-2, 4-6, 5-7 victory, with the report noting Nagal lost both steam and temper in the closing stages.

Dhakshineswar began his Davis Cup debut confidently and closed out the first set with an ace, but Kwon raised his level in the second by serving wide and targeting the Indian's backhand; Kwon's deeper returns curtailed Dhakshineswar's ability to dictate rallies and a low bounce compounded the visitor's difficulties.

Kwon produced two break-point chances in the fourth game of the second set that Dhakshineswar saved with an ace and an overhead volley, and although a double fault later gave Kwon another opening, the Indian countered until Kwon converted a backhand winner to go 4-2. Kwon served out the set to level the match, and in the decider a 0-40 sequence in the fifth game saw Dhakshineswar squander chances before his forehand sailed long on the third break point, allowing Kwon to consolidate and move to 4-2, from where the Korean took control.

India have overcome a 0-2 deficit to advance from Davis Cup ties on only two previous occasions, in 2010 against Brazil at home and in 2018 against China away, when Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the decisive doubles match. With India trailing 0-2, the doubles pair N Sriram Balaji and Niki Poonacha carry the responsibility to keep the tie alive.

India must win all three rubbers on the final day to progress to the knockout stage; the doubles rubber featuring N Sriram Balaji and Niki Poonacha is scheduled next and will determine whether the visitors can extend the tie into the singles reverse rubbers.
