Deadlock hits 262,145 concurrent Steam players after Massive City Never Sleeps update

On 2026-10-10, Valve’s closed-playtest live-service multiplayer title Deadlock reached an all-time peak of 262,145 concurrent players on Steam following the rollout of the Massive City Never Sleeps update. The surge occurred during the invite-only playtest and was tied to a broad set of content, systems and UI changes included in the patch.
The Massive City Never Sleeps update added six new heroes, a major visual overhaul of the map and neutral units, and HUD improvements, according to the developer notes. Deadlock remains in a closed playtest accessible only by invite on Steam, with no confirmation on an official launch date. The game has shown repeated spikes in popularity whenever Valve issues significant updates, and the new peak surpassed the title’s previous 171,490-player mark.
Map systems received a complete rework in the update, including new Steam Vents that provide temporary invisibility and health regeneration when a player stands inside them. The patch also introduced interactive objectives such as Tough Crates, which require heavy melee attacks to open, and Healing Snacks hidden across the battlefield to restore health during matches.
Neutral objectives were restructured into a system called Haunts to add variety to encounters within games. Golden Statues were converted into Buff Containers that grant bonus abilities listed in the notes as Bullet Resistance, Spirit Resistance, Ability Range and Movement Speed.
Valve added several broader gameplay and interface changes, including The Broker and Corrupted Items, revamped shop menus, an enhanced event feed, UI tweaks and a new dialogue viewer for the Hideout. The release notes describe sweeping gameplay improvements alongside those systems-level and visual updates.
The playable roster has been expanded by six heroes in the rollout, with the update materials stating each hero brings unique abilities and playstyles to increase strategic depth and compositions. The developer-provided hero preview highlighted Solomon with the following descriptions: ♟️Setup Bishop: Create & move a Bishop dealing spirit damage and activating squares that damage enemies that step on them. 🐴 Kingside Knight: Promote an ally to a Knight, granting bonus stamina and a barrier.
