On Monday at Lincoln’s Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed on 199 during the 1st unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A, and footage of his stunned reaction circulated widely.

India A had been bowled out for 113 in their first innings while New Zealand A made 317 to lead by 204, and the visitors began their second innings badly, losing Yashasvi Jaiswal to a bouncer and KL Rahul to a bowled delivery inside five overs to be 10 for 2.

Padikkal resumed Day 3 on 56 alongside Sai Sudharsan on 39; the two left-handers coped with strong winds and converted loose bowling into runs, compiling a 215-run partnership before Sudharsan top-edged a short ball for 91.

Padikkal reached his 12th first-class century with a six off Jayden Lennox and later stitched a 142-run stand in 142 balls with Yash Rathod, who scored 66 before being dismissed after tea, while Sudharsan’s more measured innings allowed Padikkal to take on the bowlers.

The dismissal came when Zak Gibson bowled down the leg side, Padikkal attempted a clip and missed, wicketkeeper Mitchell Hay collected the ball and New Zealand A appealed; the umpire raised his finger and Padikkal remained motionless on the pitch, appearing shocked and indicating with his hands how far the ball had gone past his bat, insisting it had only brushed his pads.

Reports noted a sound as the ball passed the bat and that the appeal did not look especially strong; Padikkal’s 199 required 248 balls and included 24 fours and three sixes, and India A continued to press thereafter with Washington Sundar unbeaten on 51 as the side closed Day 3 at 488 for 8.

India A finished Day 3 with a lead of 284 and one day left to play in the match.
