Brighton beat Crystal Palace 5-0 in a Premier League derby this season, with Diego Gómez’s long-range wondergoal among five goals in a dominant display. The rout extended an impressive run for the south coast club.

For two or three years observers have highlighted how well-run Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth are, often accepting them as efficient outfits making the most of limited resources. This season, with many major clubs in transition, that framing is being questioned: Manchester City began the season with seven straight wins, and the possibility that punishment for their breaches of Premier League regulations could take them out of the top-five race was raised. Brentford started the weekend in third but had drawn four games and then lost 2-1 to Liverpool after Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off just before half-time, while Bournemouth recorded a 2-0 win over Sunderland.

Brighton’s derby victory ended a run of four matches against Palace without success and saw Crystal Palace 3-0 down inside 10 minutes. The opener came via a Jaydee Canvot own goal, induced by Brighton’s intensity, and Gómez’s second was a perfectly weighted drive from just inside the Palace half.

The scoreline underlined Brighton’s attacking breadth: already this season 11 different players have scored for the club in the league. The team has been described as a side without stars, the collective often outweighing individual names.

The contrast with February is stark; Brighton lost 1-0 to Palace then and had won only one of their previous 12 Premier League games, prompting growing calls for Fabian Hürzeler to be sacked. Over the summer they lost Carlos Baleba, Jan Paul van Hecke, Danny Welbeck and James Milner, yet brought in a mix of experience and youth.

Among the additions, 19-year-old centre-back Luka Vušković, who spent last season on loan at Hamburg from Tottenham, has already looked at home. The 21-year-old Spanish midfielder Chema Andrés, signed from Stuttgart, sparkled from the bench against Arsenal and has excelled in the two games since. The transfer dealings included an effective centre-back swap with Spurs when Van Hecke moved to London.

A standout this season has been Pascal Gross, who returned in January after a season and a half at Borussia Dortmund. No player in the Premier League has registered more than his four assists this season; Nobody has run further. He has three goals and averages a league-high 3.0 key passes a game, and the club’s decision to bring back a 35-year-old has been described as a masterstroke.

Brighton’s European involvement has not appeared to unsettle them as it did on their first foray, or as it seems to be draining Bournemouth, Crystal Palace and Sunderland, a situation linked in the coverage to the relative quality of the Conference League. They have achieved recent results without Kaoru Mitoma, Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer, all of whom should be back at some point over the next month, and the team has not won a game in December since 2023.

It remains a major step for a club unfamiliar with the Champions League to haul itself into the top five, but the view offered is that if any of the so-called B clubs are going to break into the Champions League, Brighton may never have a better opportunity than they do this season.
