Dilpreet scores four as India romp to 13-1 win over Indonesia in Asian Games opener
India defeated Indonesia 13-1 in their opening Pool A match at the Asian Games in Kakamigahara on Sunday, September 20, 2026, with Dilpreet Singh scoring four field goals. All four of Dilpreet's strikes came from open play as India, the defending champions, ran up a large margin.
The victory featured multiple scorers for India: Shilanand Lakra (6th, 35th) and Sukhjeet Singh (38th, 48th) each scored twice, while Abhishek (12th), Rajinder Singh (19th), Mandeep Singh (21st), skipper Harmanpreet Singh (28th) and Jugraj Singh (47th) also found the net. Indonesia's only goal was a penalty corner by Aulia Al Ardh in the 33rd minute.
India opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Lakra finished a rebound after skipper Harmanpreet's drag-flick was saved by Indonesia goalkeeper Alam Fajar. India controlled possession for the majority of the game and doubled the lead in the 12th minute when Abhishek converted a rebound following an initial save by the Indonesian custodian.
Dilpreet made it 3-0 in the 18th minute, pushing in an assist from Abhishek, and added a second a minute later from a Sukhjeet Singh pass. Seconds after Dilpreet's second, Rajinder turned in a rebound to score and Mandeep followed with a field goal in the 21st minute.
In the 27th minute India were awarded a penalty stroke after Manpreet Singh was fouled inside the 'D', but Harmanpreet's attempt was stopped by Fajar. Harmanpreet then converted a penalty corner in the 28th minute to give India a 7-0 lead at half-time.
After the break Indonesia reduced the deficit when Al Ardh scored from a penalty corner in the 33rd minute, but Lakra struck again in the 35th minute. Dilpreet completed a hat-trick in the 37th minute after an initial shot was blocked by Fajar, Sukhjeet scored in the 38th, Jugraj converted a penalty corner in the 47th, Sukhjeet added another in the 48th and Dilpreet finished with his fourth in the 49th minute.
He credited his four goals to team effort and said the focus is on winning gold and ensuring a direct ticket to 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. "We played really well. We are focused on our basics and game structures. It's mostly about penalty corners, how to get them and score goals. "It's a great team effort as we are helping each other on the pitch," Dilpeet said. "All teams here are very good, we shouldn't take easy any (of them). We need to play our game moving step by step with the matches." India will next play Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
