Djokovic set to leave ATP top 10 after US Open first-round defeat by Mariano Navone

Novak Djokovic lost to Mariano Navone in the first round of the US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 31, 2026, and is set to fall out of the ATP top 10 for the first time in eight years.

Djokovic was beaten 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in a four-hour, 36-minute match, marking his earliest Grand Slam exit in more than 20 years.

After dropping the opening set, the Serbian fought back to win the third and hold a 2-1 lead, but his physical condition deteriorated as the match progressed. He vomited during play, suffered cramping and pain, and received treatment for back and shoulder problems. Djokovic was a break ahead in the fourth set but could not sustain his level as Navone won the last two sets 6-2, 6-1 to complete what the report described as the biggest victory of the Argentine's career.

Djokovic has remained inside the ATP top 10 since 2018, and the loss will bring that run to an end. The change will leave the men's top 10 without any member of the Big Three — Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal — for the first time in nearly 24 years. The last ATP top 10 published without any of the trio was on October 7, 2002.

The defeat also ended Djokovic's pursuit of a record 25th Grand Slam title and represented his first opening-round loss at a major since the 2006 Australian Open. For Mariano Navone, the result was described in the report as a career-defining night.

The ATP rankings to be published on September 14 will confirm Djokovic's exit from the top 10.
