Doku signs until 2031 as Manchester City assess transfer business; Gonzalez denies exit talk
On 6 August 2026, Manchester City winger Jeremy Doku signed a new contract at the Etihad Stadium that runs until 2031, and Belgium international Nico Gonzalez has dismissed suggestions he will leave the club, saying "I'm happy here."
Doku joined City from Rennes for £55.4m in 2023 and played 48 times for the club last season, scoring eight goals as City won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in Pep Guardiola's final season in charge; sources told BBC Sport an official announcement of his new deal is expected next week. He is the fourth City player to commit new terms this summer following Phil Foden, Josko Gvardiol and Abdukodir Khusanov.
Gonzalez, who moved to City from Porto for £50m in January, made 41 appearances across all competitions last season and produced the FA Cup semi-final winner against Southampton, but he was in and out of the team for much of the campaign. So far this pre-season he has featured in both friendly matches against Inter Milan and the K-League XI, and when asked about his future he said: "I'm happy here. I don't want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven't seen anything but I'm happy here."
Approaching the second week of August, City have completed one permanent signing in this window, Elliot Anderson, with the fee paid to Nottingham Forest reported as a club record £116m; the 23-year-old is seen as a replacement for Bernardo Silva, who departed at the end of his contract and joined Real Madrid. Club sources expect Anderson to be a likely starter this season.
Younger acquisitions have arrived for development and loan moves: teenage winger Jeremy Monga joined from Leicester and may be given playing time in the academy, while goalkeeper Pierce Charles and winger Mathys Detourbet immediately went out on loan after joining. Vitor Reis, who spent last season on loan at Girona, has returned to the squad and is expected to be part of the first team.
Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed that director of football Hugo Viana and chief executive Ferran Soriano travelled to South Korea, where the team are currently spending pre-season, and admitted "we need to something" in regards to transfers. Senior City sources described their stance as "relaxed" and said they have full "trust" in the club's transfer strategy; the club pointed to January moves for Antoine Semenyo and Marc Guehi, which were long-term targets brought forward and have made a positive impact.
Several potential departures remain under discussion: Rodri has not yet signed a new contract and is attracting attention from Real Madrid and Barcelona, Tijjani Reijnders is likely to leave with interest from Nottingham Forest, and winger Savinho is reportedly open to leaving with Tottenham exploring a move though nothing has materialised. If players do depart, City plan to bring in replacements and have been linked with Chelsea's Pedro Neto, while talks are ongoing over Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli; Bouaddi was part of the Morocco side that reached the World Cup quarter-finals.
An official announcement on Doku's new contract is expected next week while City continue pre-season preparations in South Korea and integrate summer signings ahead of the coming campaign.
