Donaldson ends six-year wait with 4-2 win over Brown at Northern Ireland Open

Scott Donaldson defeated Jordan Brown 4-2 at the Northern Ireland Open at the Waterfront Hall on 23 October 2026 to reach the tournament quarter-finals.
Donaldson, listed as world number 64 in the report, ended a six-year wait for a ranking quarter-final appearance, reaching his first ranking quarter-final since the 2020 Northern Ireland Open; the match was described as a cagey encounter in which the Scot edged ahead three times. Brown is identified in the report as an Antrim native, and the victory secured Donaldson’s place in the last eight.
The match unfolded with Donaldson taking the opening frame, Brown levelling in the second, and Donaldson winning the third and fourth to move within one frame of victory. Brown won the fifth to extend the contest, but Donaldson prevailed in the sixth to seal the 4-2 result and progress to the quarter-finals.
On the occasion, Donaldson gave a post-match assessment to BBC Sport NI: "I get more enjoyment out of the playing aspect of the game, so it wasn't totally enjoyable tonight," Donaldson told BBC Sport NI. "I got myself through to the next round and that is all really that matters but, obviously, playing Jordan is hard and then the table was really, really tough as the pockets were so tight. "This combined with the fact that I'm not overly confident right now. I'm OK in patches but just all that made for a tough evening."
Other second-round results reported included Jak Jones holding off a late fightback from Daniel Wells to win 4-2, and three-time world champion Mark Williams beating Martin O'Donnell 4-0, compiling breaks of 58 and 127 to reach the last eight. David Gilbert also advanced with a win over Kai Wai Cheung, who had beaten Ronnie O'Sullivan in the first round, and Kyren Wilson won a final-frame decider against Junxu Pang in an earlier session as he continues his quest for his first ranking win since his Players Championship win over Judd Trump in March 2025.
The quarter-final draw for Friday, 23 October is listed as Anthony McGill v Kyren Wilson; Sam Craigie v Elliot Slessor; David Gilbert v Mark Williams; and Jak Jones v Scott Donaldson.
