Elanga and Wissa fire Newcastle to 2-0 win at Tottenham

Newcastle beat Tottenham 2-0 at Tottenham’s first home Premier League fixture on 29 August 2026 as Anthony Elanga and Yoanne Wissa scored second-half goals to secure the visitors three points.

Tottenham began the game under the glare of their summer spending, with a pre-match programme letter from chief executive Vinai Venkatesham leading on the club’s outlay and proclaiming: "We have attracted the names we wanted to attract." The match turned after half-time as Newcastle became more compact and assertive and began to dominate possession. Just after the hour Nico González, from about 10 yards outside his own box, played a 60-yard pass left-to-right to the corner of the Tottenham area; Amar Dedic ran beyond his winger and headed the ball down into the path of Elanga, who took a touch, spun and struck a left-foot shot inside the far post for what the report described as his "second goal in two matches." De Zerbi reacted with a triple substitution that included the return of Mohammed Kudus after eight months out.

Tottenham were soon two down. In the 72nd minute a corner conceded by Spurs was delivered deep by Lewis Hall and met by substitute Nick Woltemade, whose header found Wissa; the forward audaciously scooped the ball over his head and past Antonin Kinsky. The travelling Newcastle supporters celebrated both goals and cheered the substitution of Tonali, while Tottenham fans resorted to booing at full time.

The defeat left Spurs with a difficult start to the season and represented a pleasing result for Jaissle’s side, described in the report as "a heartening victory" achieved while Newcastle still have further additions to come.
