England player ratings after 3-2 Nations League defeat by Spain

England lost 3-2 to world champions Spain in a Nations League match, their first game since this summer's World Cup. The contest produced a late Mikel Oyarzabal winner after Alex Baena had levelled following a missed penalty by Harry Kane.

Lamine Yamal opened the scoring for Spain before Anthony Gordon and Harry Kane put England in front; Kane's penalty attempt struck the bar after he slipped, allowing Baena to curl in an equaliser. The match was described as entertaining and saw momentum swing several times before Oyarzabal decided the outcome.

James Trafford 6: Showed early composure with the ball at his feet but conceded after two minutes when Marc Guehi gifted possession to Lamine Yamal; made an important save to prevent Ferran Torres making it 2-0 in the first half.

Jarell Quansah 6: Continued at right-back following his World Cup display in the position; physically dominant and headed over a chance to score.

Myles Lewis-Skelly 6: Made his first England start in central midfield after standing out for Arsenal, tasked with restricting supply to Rodri; replaced after 70 minutes.

Jude Bellingham 8: Produced another dominant display, provided the assist for England's equaliser and won the penalty which Kane struck against the bar after slipping; in stoppage time he stung Simon's palms with a drive.

Bukayo Saka 6: Won a couple of free-kicks around the box, shot over from the edge of the area and curled just wide with the score level, ending up having a relatively quiet night.

Anthony Gordon 8: Scored an excellent counter-attacking goal after being played through by Bellingham; used his pace to cause problems and supplied a dangerous cross after England fell behind.

Harry Kane 7: Began dropping deep to find the ball after England went behind, scored the second with a deflected header to put England ahead and later missed the penalty opportunity in the second half.

James Garner (on 70, for Lewis-Skelly) 6: Took over the midfield role aimed at keeping Rodri quiet.

Morgan Rogers (on 70, for Gordon) 6: Had limited possession during his 20 minutes on the pitch.

Morgan Gibbs-White (on 83, for Saka) 6: Came on to operate on the left wing.

Calvert-Lewin (on 83, for Kane) 6: Entered late with little time to influence the game.

Jarrad Branthwaite (on 89, for Guehi) 6: A late defensive change with no time to make an impression.
