European Athletics Championships in Birmingham: full timetable and BBC coverage

The European Athletics Championships will be held at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham from 10-16 August, and the BBC will provide live coverage across BBC One, BBC Two, BBC iPlayer, Radio 5 Live, the BBC Sport website and app, plus social channels including YouTube.

This is the first time the European Athletics Championships are staged in Great Britain; the event opens on Monday, just over a week after the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. There are 50 gold medals available, and the British squad includes defending champions Keely Hodgkinson and Dina Asher-Smith alongside Matthew Hudson-Smith, Katarina Johnson-Thompson, Amy Hunt, Georgia Hunter Bell and Jake Wightman. Sweden's Armand Duplantis, Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Greece's Miltiadis Tentoglou are each seeking a fourth successive European title, while Italy's Marcell Jacobs is aiming for a third straight 100m crown.

BBC television coverage will be carried on BBC One and BBC Two with supplementary streaming on BBC iPlayer; Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds will provide daily live commentary. The BBC Sport website and app will run live text, reports, analysis, video clips and a medal table, and the broadcaster will use its social media channels, including YouTube. Gabby Logan and Jeanette Kwakye will present the TV coverage, with commentary from Steve Cram, Andrew Cotter, Steve Backley, Colin Jackson and Paula Radcliffe and analysis from Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, Greg Rutherford and Jenny Meadows.

At Rome 2024, Asher-Smith (100m), Hodgkinson (800m), the women's half-marathon team and the women's 4x100m relay squad won gold as Great Britain finished third in the medal table. Hosts Italy topped that table with 11 golds and 24 medals, while France had four golds and 16 medals. The championships have been held every two years since 2010, and Great Britain previously topped the medals in Brussels 1950, Budapest 1998, Zurich 2014, Berlin 2018 and Munich 2022.

Dina Asher-Smith has six European golds and two silvers from four championships and could surpass Sandra Elkasevic (formerly Perkovic)'s seven golds to become the most successful athlete in the history of the competition; she could also overtake Irena Szewinska's total of 10 medals accrued between 1966 and 1978. Jakob Ingebrigtsen has six golds and no other medals at this event, while Femke Broeders-Bol has five golds and a bronze from two championships. On the men's side, Matthew Hudson-Smith has four golds and seven medals in total; one more medal would equal Christophe Lamaitre as the championships' most-decorated male athlete, and a gold would draw him level with Roger Black and Sir Mo Farah for British men with the most European titles.

The women's 800m, featuring defending champion Keely Hodgkinson, Audrey Werro and Femke Broeders-Bol, is one of the headline match-ups: Hodgkinson, 24, skipped the Commonwealth Games and arrives off a win at the London Diamond League meeting in July. Werro beat Hodgkinson in June and has twice run faster than the reigning Olympic champion this season, edging closer to the 43-year-old world record of one minute 53.28 seconds. Broeders-Bol has moved up from the 400m hurdles to the 800m and finished just behind Hodgkinson at London Stadium. The women's 800m heats take place on Tuesday morning, semi-finals on Thursday morning and the final at 21:45 on Friday, 14 August.

All times are BST and subject to late changes. Opening-day daytime TV coverage runs 10:30-13:15 on BBC One, with Max Burgin in 800m qualifying and Asher-Smith beginning her 100m title defence. Evening television coverage is scheduled 19:00-20:00 on BBC Two and 20:00-22:00 on BBC One, with Radio 5 Live & Sounds carrying evening coverage from 21:00-22:00; the women's 100m final involving Asher-Smith and Amy Hunt is listed for 21:50 (semi-finals from 20:10), the mixed 4x400m relay is scheduled at 21:40 and Jakob Ingebrigtsen is set to return in the men's 5,000m final at 20:40.
