Evanilson, Rayan and Rodríguez secure Bournemouth’s first European home win

Bournemouth defeated Sturm Graz 3-0 at the Vitality in the Europa League on 15 October 2026, with goals from Evanilson, Rayan and Álvaro Rodríguez. Rodríguez’s injury-time penalty completed the scoreline after Evanilson’s first-half header and Rayan’s second-half close-range finish.
The victory was the club’s first European win at home in Boscombe and followed Bournemouth’s earlier away success at Real Sociedad, a run that the club hope will ease pressure on manager Marco Rose amid a difficult start in the Premier League. The match was staged as a flag day at the Vitality, with Elvis Presley and Andy Williams replacing the usual dance tracks on the public-address system and a banner in the Steve Fletcher stand reading "Minus 17 to European dreams".
Rose made selection choices that suggested Premier League matters had been a priority, with changes after a 5-1 defeat by Chelsea and several key players rested for the Sunderland fixture. Ben Gannon-Doak provided pace on the right while Evanilson, typically a target man, operated in a supporting role to the summer signing Álvaro Rodríguez; Adam Smith’s overlap created Bournemouth’s early openings.
Bournemouth created chances but struggled for clinical execution in the first half; Marcus Tavernier skewed an effort wide and a Gannon-Doak cross was misjudged by Rodríguez. Graz’s defence compressed space, and from a corner the ball appeared to have been bundled in off Bafode Diakité’s arm before Tavernier later struck the outside of a post.
A potential penalty for Graz was disallowed when the official penalised Belmin Beganovic for diving after going over Smith’s tackle, and Smith then supplied the flicked header that Evanilson directed off the angle for the first European goal celebrated in Boscombe. That goal left Bournemouth with the lead their first half had merited.
Graz were more assertive after the break, Simon Seidl forcing a shot wide and, as their pressure grew, Jürgen Heil struck the post before Jacob-Peter Hödl saw a rebound turned onto the line by a remarkable reflex save from Djordje Petrovic. James Hill had been introduced for Smith shortly before those two near-misses.
Rose’s 70th-minute triple substitution — bringing on Rayan, Justin Kluivert and Ryan Christie — aimed to shore up midfield and add attacking impetus; Christie missed an early opportunity but Rayan, following his strike at La Real, finished from close range after Daniil Khudyakov first failed to claim a corner and then only got a weak hand to the shot through a crowd of players.
The win should relieve some immediate domestic scrutiny for Bournemouth and arrives with a Sunderland fixture noted by the manager as one where both clubs must manage the Thursday–Sunday rhythm; several players had their legs saved for that upcoming match.
