Ezri Konsa completed a £55m transfer from Aston Villa to Arsenal on 21 August 2026, signing a four-year contract with the Premier League champions that includes an option to extend for a further year. The 28-year-old England defender said: "It's a privilege to be here and can't wait to get started," and added: "I want to keep winning, I'm hungry to win and that's what I'm here for. "It's a proud moment for me and my family to play for one of the best teams in the world."

After weeks of negotiation, Villa and Arsenal reached an agreement on Wednesday that could see Aston Villa receive up to an additional £4m in add-ons. BBC Sport revealed Arsenal were in talks with Villa about Konsa last week but the clubs initially disagreed on his valuation; Bayer Leverkusen's Jarrell Quansah was also considered by the Gunners before a fee was agreed. Konsa joined Villa in July 2019 from Brentford, made 286 appearances for the club and helped them win the Europa League in May — the club's first European trophy since 1982. Last season he scored two goals with one assist in 48 appearances as Unai Emery's side finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League football.

Arsenal's sporting director Andrea Berta said: "Ezri is a defender of high quality, whose athleticism, composure and tactical intelligence have established him as one of the Premier League's most consistent performers. "Being comfortable in both central defence and at right-back, Ezri will bring valuable versatility to our squad while maintaining the high defensive standards which are fundamental to our challenge of winning major trophies." The club have also made Piero Hincapie's loan deal permanent this summer.

Konsa featured in every England game as Thomas Tuchel's side reached the World Cup semi-finals, losing to Argentina before winning the Bronze medal match by beating France. He revealed he had spoken with Arsenal's England players while at the World Cup — Eberechi Eze, Noni Madueke, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka — and said: "They said I'll enjoy it. I'm looking forward to training with them and playing with them." Emery granted him four weeks' leave after the tournament and he did not appear in Villa's pre-season matches, including the 2-1 defeat by Paris St-Germain in the Uefa Super Cup.

Arsenal have spent more than £100m this window, signing Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle for £75m and Club Brugge winger Christos Tzolis for £34m. Their organised defence, aided by the partnership of William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes, helped them win the title last season while conceding 27 league goals. Saliba has been ruled out for an "extended period" with a long-term back issue and Jurrien Timber is also out for the opening weeks with a groin problem, leaving Ben White as the only fit right-back and 21-year-old Cristhian Mosquera as the only right-sided centre back available to partner Gabriel.

The changes at Villa have been driven in part by financial constraints under Uefa's squad cost ratio (SCR), which restricts clubs to spending 70% of football-related revenue on wages, transfer fees and agent fees. Villa have been fined twice by Uefa — £9.5m and £19.4m, with £12.9m suspended after a settlement — and the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules limited losses to a maximum of £105m over a rolling three-year period. In accounts ending 30 June 2025 Villa recorded a post-tax profit of £17m after losses of £119.6m in 2023 and £85.4m in 2024.

Several members of Villa's Europa League-winning side have departed this summer: Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers left last month, with Rogers' £117m move to Chelsea reported as a record fee for an English player, and Lucas Digne was sold to Paris St-Germain. Villa must also find a solution for goalkeeper Emi Martinez after his failed move to Juventus and the arrival of Japan's Zion Suzuki as his replacement, while Matty Cash, Pau Torres, Victor Lindelof, John McGinn and Emi Buendia remain from the XI that started in Istanbul.

Konsa's signing provides Arsenal with additional defensive cover as Villa continue to reshape their squad; the transfer deadline is 1 September.
