FA charges Krystian Bielik over Fratton Park incident as police end probe
The Football Association has formally charged Cardiff City defender Krystian Bielik with misconduct over an altercation involving Portsmouth supporters at Fratton Park during Cardiff’s 2-0 Championship defeat on Saturday, 5 September, while Hampshire Police have said their investigation has concluded with no further action to be taken.
The FA issued a statement alleging improper conduct, saying: "It's alleged that the player [Bielik] acted in an improper manner around the 71st minute of the match." Bielik has been given until Friday, 25 September to respond to the charge. Hampshire Police confirmed officers were notified during the match and launched an inquiry immediately afterwards before reaching a conclusion.
Hampshire Police set out the outcome in a statement: "Following an incident involving a Portsmouth FC supporter and a Cardiff player at Fratton Park on 5 September 2026, we have now concluded our investigation." The force added that, "After speaking with the complainant and reviewing all available evidence, the matter has been resolved by way of an out-of-court disposal, agreed by all parties involved. As part of this resolution, an apology has been provided by the player." The statement finished: "The matter is now considered closed, and no further action will be taken in relation to this incident."
Club and match footage details of the confrontation describe Bielik becoming involved in a physical altercation with a fan as the 28-year-old went to retrieve a ball from the crowd late in the second half. Several Portsmouth supporters made gestures suggesting they believed the fan had been grabbed by the throat, and clips circulating on social media appeared to show the Poland international grabbing a young fan around his upper body. Cardiff head coach Brian Barry-Murphy said Bielik "got slapped in the face" during the incident.
The post-match situation escalated further when another spectator threw a ball at the head of Cardiff defender Perry Ng; both supporters involved in the disturbances were ejected from the stadium. After the game, Portsmouth head coach John Mousinho apologised to Cardiff City's players for the way the events unfolded. In the days that followed and having been shown the footage, Mousinho said he was "absolutely furious" at the position he says he was put in over the incident.
Cardiff City have been asked to comment on the sequence of events and the FA charge against Bielik.
Bielik must respond to the FA charge by Friday, 25 September, after which the association will determine whether to impose a sanction or take further disciplinary steps.
