FA Community Shield: Comprehensive list of winners and competition facts

The Football Association runs the annual FA Community Shield, formerly known as the Charity Shield through the 2001 edition, which is staged each August and contested by the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners.

Played as the traditional curtain-raiser for the new Premier League season, the fixture has been held mostly at Wembley: all but seven Community Shield matches since 1974 took place at the original or renovated Wembley stadiums. Stamford Bridge has hosted the second-most finals and was the venue for the first Charity Shield in 1908.

Manchester United hold the competition record with 21 FA Community Shield titles since the competition began; they also have the most appearances, 30, and the most losses, nine. The club also won the inaugural Community Shield in 1908.

A total of 22 clubs have won the Community Shield outright. Despite its long history and wide list of winners, some observers describe the match as a ceremonial friendly that lacks the significance of other domestic trophies, and Shield success has proved to be an unreliable predictor of form in the season that follows.
