Six-time major winner McIlroy is tied for 17th on four-under par after his second round was stopped following four holes. The Northern Ireland player began the round with a superb eagle and had recorded three pars before the hooter sounded to end play.
Northern Ireland's Tom McKibbin, who started the second round one shot off the lead, had dropped to three back at five-under after seven holes when play was halted. Tommy Fleetwood and Robert MacIntyre were also unable to finish after the fourth hole and join McIlroy on four-under, four shots adrift of the leaders.
The delay followed heavy rain and thunderstorms that forced a five-hour suspension during Thursday's opening round.
Play is scheduled to resume at 02:45 BST on Saturday.
