Chennai Super Kings traded Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis to Sunrisers Hyderabad in exchange for Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards, a move revealed on November 5, 2026 ahead of the IPL 2027 mini-auction set for December 16, 2026 in Goa. The transaction prompted widespread criticism from CSK supporters across social media platforms.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has set November 17 as the deadline for franchises to submit retained and released player lists, and the trade window has been open as teams reshape squads before the December mini-auction. The swap between the two South Indian franchises surprised many observers because CSK parted with two frontline fast bowlers, with the article noting Khaleel Ahmed had performed brilliantly for the side over the past two years.

Fans expressed immediate shock online. One supporter wrote on Twitter: "SHOCKING, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE CSK ❌They have given Khaleel Ahmed & Nathan Ellis to SRH for trading Liam Livingstone & Jack Edwards.Khaleel was the best bowler of CSK & Ellis has been consistent over the years for Australia, how can you gift two quality bowlers, very poor. pic.twitter.com/gkXevcuhUj"

Support for Nathan Ellis drew particular sympathy because he missed last season with injury and many fans wanted to see him play for CSK. A fan posted: "Oh, the news of Nathan Ellis going away. I don’t know what happens with his form and all from here on, but I am very sad about it. Ellis was one player I really wanted to see playing the entire season and leading our bowling attack. It is just sad for me.Also, thank you Khaleel… https://t.co/nD0MVYUtmL"

Some supporters labelled the deal a poor piece of business. Another post read: "The most pointless trade we've ever made. Unless there is a good backup plan for Khaleel's replacement (better be really good), just don't see the point of it. Ellis – great bowler but not committed enough imo (looking from outside). Liam will be useful but Edwards? https://t.co/dMOPQs1XgY" and one added: "All-timer from CSK this. The absolute worst trade in IPL history perhaps https://t.co/ERC94Y8JuF"

Several users argued Sunrisers Hyderabad had gained the upper hand off the field and listed recent episodes they said favoured SRH. One post read: "– Deliberately increased both Karthik's and Veer's price than they deserved and hurt our purse– Defeated us 2 times this year – Hukum cp strike– Ishan Kishan celebration in our home Chepauk – Gave their 2 bench players and got our main bowlers through tradeSRH has… I would say SRH won here…"

Liam Livingstone’s recent form and Khaleel Ahmed’s performances for CSK over the last two years were cited by fans as drivers of the backlash. "However, no one can predict the future, and perhaps the Super Kings have a different perspective. They may have their eyes on a different set of players in the mini-auction and could use this opportunity to build a more balanced squad."

The next formal date on the calendar is the IPL 2027 mini-auction on December 16, 2026 in Goa.
