Federer to make one-night US Open return alongside Roddick, Agassi and McEnroe
Roger Federer will return to Arthur Ashe Stadium on August 25 for a one-night exhibition during Fan Week at the US Open, sharing the court with Andy Roddick, Andre Agassi and John McEnroe. The appearance comes four years after he announced his retirement from professional tennis.
Federer is a 20-time Grand Slam champion who last competed at the US Open in 2019, making this exhibition his first return to Arthur Ashe Stadium since then. He won five consecutive US Open titles from 2004 to 2008, and his five titles remain a joint Open Era record alongside Pete Sampras and Jimmy Connors. The organisers confirmed his participation as a special, single-night return to the venue.
The event will open with a one-set singles match between Federer and Roddick, with a deciding point to settle the contest if required. Federer and Roddick met 24 times on the professional tour, with Federer winning 21 of those encounters. After the singles, the exhibition will shift to doubles, with Federer partnering four-time US Open champion McEnroe against Roddick and Agassi.
US Open organisers confirmed Federer's appearance and described it as a special return for one night under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. "Looking forward to being back in New York and adding new memories to so many special ones over the years," Federer said. "See you soon NYC."
Federer's connection to Flushing Meadows includes five straight titles that established his record at the event, and his last competitive outing at the tournament took place in 2019. Roddick won the US Open in 2003 after defeating Juan Carlos Ferrero. McEnroe has seven Grand Slam singles titles, including four US Open crowns, while Agassi collected eight major titles and triumphed in New York in 1994 and 1999.
The exhibition is scheduled for August 25 as part of Fan Week, ahead of the main tournament. The 2026 US Open will begin with qualifying and mixed doubles before the singles main draw gets underway on August 30.
Federer's appearance has been presented as a nostalgic interlude before the tournament shifts focus to current players, with Jannik Sinner absent and Carlos Alcaraz returning from a lengthy injury layoff.
