Fernandes hat-trick fires Manchester United to 5-2 home win over Ipswich

Manchester United beat Ipswich 5-2 at home in Sunday’s match, with Bruno Fernandes scoring a hat-trick. BBC Sport has published player ratings for both sides and assessed Marcus Rashford’s return to the starting XI.
United recovered from a first-half deficit to win 5-2, with Fernandes producing a match-turning display and nearly adding a fourth from distance. The ratings piece explains how each player performed and invites readers to submit their own scores.
Senne Lammens was given an 8 for standing firm and coming out on top as Enciso charged at him, including coming out of his area to control and lay off a pass to Shaw. Diogo Dalot received a 7 after a curling left-footed effort that nearly produced a goal and a solid defensive showing. Harry Maguire was rated 8 as a reliable presence who benefited from a deflection on his goal, while Lisandro Martinez was marked 6 for experience that steadied the side despite a mistake that led to Ipswich’s late goal. Luke Shaw was awarded a 5 after a difficult outing against Abdul Fatawu.
In midfield and attack, Kobbie Mainoo earned a 6 after being restored to the starting line-up and performing well on the ball, and Youri Tielemans was given a 5, described as still searching for form and judged not secure defensively after going down too easily in the penalty area. Matheus Cunha scored a 7 for his role through the middle, and Bryan Mbeumo was rated 6 for holding a wide position, threatening with crosses and short passes and eventually scoring late. Bruno Fernandes received a 10: he scored a thunderous equaliser, converted a penalty after two pre-season failures and added a composed third, and he nearly scored an outrageous fourth from halfway. Marcus Rashford was awarded a 7 on his first league start for Man Utd since December 2024, getting on the ball often, running at Ipswich’s defence and almost creating a goal for Mbeumo.
Substitutes for United were noted with their ratings: Leny Yoro (on 72, for Dalot) 6; Noussair Mazraoui (on 72, for Shaw) 6; Benjamin Sesko (79, for Cunha) 6; Patrick Dorgu (79, for Rashford) 7; Andrey Santos (79, for Mainoo) 6. Unused substitutes listed were Darlow, Zirkzee, Heaven and Lacey.
For Ipswich, Kjell Scherpen was rated 8 after a superb save to deny Dalot an opener and a crucial touch to deny Mbeumo an easy finish, though he had no chance with the equaliser. Dara O'Shea, Issa Diop and Jacob Greaves all received 6s for largely competent defensive work, while Leif Davis earned an 8 for a precise execution for his goal and creating danger. Marcelino Nunez was given a 6 but noted for a disastrous slip that allowed Man Utd in for the crucial equaliser. Sasa Lukic and Abdul Fatawu were both rated 7; Lukic was praised for game management even at the cost of a yellow card, and Fatawu was credited with beating Shaw and supplying the assist for Ipswich’s opening goal.
Ipswich substitutions and their ratings were recorded: Chuba Akpom (on 46, Emersonn) 7; Exequiel Palacios (62, on for Nunez) 6; Darnell Furlong (on, for Maeda 72) 6; Abdoul Ouattara (on for Lukic 73) 5; Kasey McAteer (83, for Fatawu) 5. Unused Ipswich subs listed were Walton, Kipre, Egeli and Clarke.
