The first of Fernandes' goals arrived after a defensive slip by Marcelino Nunez; Matheus Cunha gained a clear run at the Ipswich goal and laid the ball on for the 31-year-old to "fire home a blistering equaliser". That strike altered the momentum after Ipswich's opening goal and brought Fernandes into the centre of the contest.
Fernandes converted a penalty in front of the Stretford End to make it 3-1 after an hour, a finish that carried added weight given he had missed two penalties in pre-season. He completed his hat-trick seven minutes later, and earlier in the second half produced an audacious 55-yard effort that landed on top of the net while Ipswich goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen was backpedalling.
At the final whistle Fernandes spoke to substitute Benjamin Sesko about a technical pass he had been attempting during injury time, then moved to shake hands with opposing players and officials before realising he had forgotten to collect the match ball; referee Craig Pawson handed it to him. Carrick offered further praise, saying: "He means a lot," and adding, "I mean, he's the captain. He's been here for a good number of years now and experienced a whole load of different emotions. Times like today, when you're looking towards certain players to give us that little bit of something else, he did particularly well."
Off the pitch, Fernandes entered the final year of his contract with United holding an option to extend by another year, and the club were managing external interest; the article notes that interest from elsewhere in Europe, including from Turkish club Galatasaray, "will not result in him leaving this month." It also states that the status of highest earner at the club now belongs to Rashford. Former United and England winger Ashley Young told Sky Sports: "He is the one that gets Manchester United ticking. Fernandes had walked onto the pitch before the match accompanied by the sons of PC Matthew Blades, who was tragically killed in a recent head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough. Earlier this season United suffered a shock 2-0 defeat at Hull City, and Fernandes admitted how difficult losing is for him, saying: "I hate losing and it is difficult to be positive when you lose games. It is very difficult for me to control the emotions. At this club you want to be on top of everything."
On Tuesday Fernandes collected the PFA Players' Player of the Year award for his phenomenal contribution to United returning to the Champions League after a two-year absence. Last season he recorded a Premier League total of 21 assists.
