Fernandez transfer uncertainty recalls Isak deadline-day saga

Manchester City's interest in Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has stirred comparisons with last summer's Alexander Isak saga after Chelsea set a 14 August deadline for bids during this transfer window and, when the date passed without any formal offers, informed Fernandez's camp he was not for sale. Fernandez joined Chelsea from Benfica for £107m in 2023. Manchester City remain keen to sign the 25-year-old and believe Chelsea still want to do a deal.
Chelsea reached an agreement with Fernandez's agent Javier Pastore in late May that the midfielder could leave for £120m, subject to any bids arriving by the 14 August deadline. Fernandez attempted to secure a move to Real Madrid earlier in the summer, a pursuit that failed despite Real Madrid later publicly denying interest. Fan reaction to Fernandez at Stamford Bridge has been mixed: there were audible jeers and cheers when he came on in Saturday's 3-1 friendly win over Real Sociedad, and he received the captain's armband when he replaced Reece James last weekend as the club said it was confident he could be reintegrated.
Last summer's Isak transfer dominated the window and provides the reference point: Alexander Isak completed a British-record move to Liverpool for £125m on transfer deadline day after weeks in which Newcastle United insisted he was not for sale. Newcastle rejected an initial £110m offer despite widespread knowledge that Isak was training away from the club with his former side Real Sociedad, and Liverpool announced the deal two-and-a-half hours after the transfer window closed.
Manchester City, managed by Fernandez's former Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, are in advanced talks over a potential £85m signing of Morocco midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi and are seeking midfield reinforcements after Rodri agreed a move to Barcelona. City have already completed several signings: Elliot Anderson for a club-record £116m from Nottingham Forest, Jeremy Monga from Leicester City for £12.5m and goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille for £1.7m. If Fernandez and Bouaddi were to join, Maresca would preside over a total outlay of more than £330m.
City expect part of that spending to be offset by sales, with proceeds from the departures of Rodri and James Trafford cited as contributors and the likely exits of Tijjani Reijnders and Savinho also expected to raise funds. Chelsea's wage bill has been reduced by the exits of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake, according to the reporting on the negotiations surrounding City and Chelsea dealings.
Xabi Alonso has used a 3-4-2-1 system in pre-season that largely mirrors the formation he employed at Bayer Leverkusen during the club's league and cup double in 2024. In Saturday's match at Stamford Bridge Moises Caicedo and Reece James started as the midfield pair, with Jordan Henderson sidelined by injury; Romeo Lavia appeared off the bench while Valentin Barco and Dario Essugo remained unused substitutes. Chelsea are described as well stocked in midfield, particularly in a season without European football, and could cope numerically if Fernandez were to leave, though the club recognise they still need to move a significant number of players before the window closes.
Chelsea have explored other options this summer, making a £64m bid for Bournemouth's Alex Scott and reportedly being offered Arsenal's Myles Lewis-Skelly, while also being linked with Crystal Palace's Adam Wharton and Monaco's Lamine Camara. Bournemouth have stated Scott is not for sale at any price and it is understood Lewis-Skelly is keen to remain at Arsenal after setting up the first goal in the Community Shield win over City. Reports from Spain add that Chelsea remain privately open to selling Fernandez and have appointed agent Jorge Mendes, who also represents Pedro Neto, to try to resolve the situation.
Whether Chelsea resist Manchester City's interest and fully reintegrate Fernandez into the squad or decide to sell the midfielder is likely to be one of the defining themes of the final two weeks of the transfer window.
