Reigning world champion D Gukesh will begin his title defence against challenger Javokhir Sindarov in Geneva, Switzerland, in the FIDE World Championship Match 2026, which runs from November 22 to December 12 and opens its first classical game on November 24.

FIDE has released the official timetable and confirmed the match will be staged at the Fondation Martin Bodmer museum in Cologny, Geneva. Classical games are scheduled to start at 3:00 PM Central European Time (CET) i.e. 7:30 PM IST on their listed dates, with rest days placed between groups of games. The organisation announced the overall match window and the venue as part of the schedule release.

The contest will consist of a maximum of 14 classical games. The first player to score 7.5 points will win the title and the match will end immediately once that threshold is reached. If the score is tied 7-7 after all 14 classical games, the champion will be decided through rapid and, if necessary, blitz tiebreaks on December 12.

Gukesh, representing India, captured the world championship by defeating China’s Ding Liren in Singapore in December 2024 and became the youngest undisputed world champion at age 18. He will enter the Geneva match seeking to become the first Indian since Viswanathan Anand to successfully defend the classical world title. As reigning champion, Gukesh carries the title into the scheduled contest.

Javokhir Sindarov qualified to challenge by winning the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament in Cyprus. Prior to that, he won the 2025 FIDE World Cup. Sindarov completed the Candidates tournament unbeaten and secured his qualification with a round to spare.

The classical game schedule runs as follows: Game 1 — November 24; Game 2 — November 25; Game 3 — November 26; Game 4 — November 28; Game 5 — November 29; Game 6 — November 30. Further dates are Game 7 — December 2; Game 8 — December 3; Game 9 — December 4; Game 10 — December 6; Game 11 — December 7; Game 12 — December 8; Game 13 — December 10; Game 14 — December 11.

Both grandmasters will be 20 years old when the match begins, making this the youngest World Championship contest since the title was first contested in 1886. That age pairing is a notable chronological detail in the event's announced schedule.

The opening ceremony for the FIDE World Championship Match 2026 is scheduled for November 22, ahead of the first classical game on November 24 at the Fondation Martin Bodmer museum in Cologny, Geneva.
