FIFA launches inaugural U-15 World Cup in Azerbaijan for October 2026

FIFA has officially launched the inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup, scheduled to take place from 22 October to 31 October 2026 in Azerbaijan. India have been drawn in Group K alongside Bahrain, Cameroon, Grenada, Laos and Senegal.

FIFA says the competition will operate as a festival-style event rather than a traditional World Cup, with invitations extended to all 211 member associations and an emphasis on player development. The federation has framed the tournament as aiming to support both the footballing and wider cultural and social development of young athletes.

The on-field format will be 8 v 8 instead of the standard 11 v 11; teams may register 14 players, including two goalkeepers, while only eight players may be on the pitch at any time. Eligible players must be born in 2011 or 2012, and matches will allow unlimited rolling substitutions.

The All India Football Federation has confirmed India’s participation, naming Bibiano Fernandes as head coach and Ranjit Bajaj in managerial duties for the side. The India U-15 Men’s National Team, known as the Blue Colts, are in camp at the Centre for Sports Excellence in Bengaluru and will play international friendly matches at home before travelling with a final 14-player squad to Azerbaijan.

The tournament will be staged as the FIFA U15 World Cup & Festival Azerbaijan 2026 and is set to be hosted in Baku in October. Organisers describe the event as the first edition of this age-group festival.

Khel Now described the competition as "a golden opportunity for the Indian U-15 Men’s National Football Team," saying participation will provide exposure and help the players prepare for the highest level of World Cup competition.

India will begin their campaign against Laos on October 24. Kick-off is scheduled for 11:45 IST.
